Kelly Clarkson Covers Tanya Tucker’s “It’s A Little Too Late” At Rodeo Houston
Rodeo Houston is in full swing, which means the content coming out of their nightly concert is overflowing. This year’s rodeo featured a stacked lineup of performers, including Megan Moroney, Riley Green, Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, the Red Clay Strays, and more. During last night’s rodeo performance, the Texas native Kelly Clarkson hit the stage and paid some homage to her country roots during her setlist.
Over the years of hosting her daytime talk show, The Kelly Clarkson Show, she’s covered numerous country hits during her Kellyoke segment—and at times, she’s covered the song better than the original performer. She’s nailed renditions of songs like “Tennessee Whiskey” and “Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain,” and this week, she did a jaw-dropping cover of The Red Clay Strays song “No One Else Like Me,” which was included on their 2024 breakout album, Made by These Moments.
During her Rodeo Houston setlist, she paid some homage to the trailblazers of country music and laid down a stellar cover from another Texas native. Kelly Clarkson brought some Tanya Tucker to the stage, laying down a stellar cover of her hit song “It’s A Little Too Late.”
The song was penned by Roger Murrah and Pat Terry, and recorded and released by Tucker in 1993 as the second single from her record, Can’t Run from Yourself. The tune was a massive hit for the Seminole, TX native, landing at number 2 on the Hot Country Songs chart, coming in right behind George Strait’s “Heartland.”
The tune is a classic heartbreaker about stubborn temptation, yet knowing that it’s too late to change the course of action. The narrator is up late at night thinking about being with a former lover, but knows that it will likely never happen again.
“Well I was up all night well wonderin’ what to doThinkin’ that I oughta just forget about youBut it’s a little too lateWell it’s a little too lateWhen you walked in I shoulda walked outWell it’s a little too late to do the right thing now”
Kelly Clarkson blew her cover of the tune out of the water and embraced her Texas roots on stage by sporting a sparkly bell-bottom jumpsuit. Kelly Clarkson is one of those artists whose songs you wonder if she can’t cover, but we have yet to find an example.
Rodeo Houston got pure country gold with this performance. Check it out:
