87% Left-Leaning: Yahoo News Favors Left, Props Up Radical Sites in February

Yahoo News is the most fanatical of the Big Four News Apps, more extreme than its counterparts Apple News, Google News and Microsoft’s MSN.  Not only did Yahoo News more heavily favor left-leaning outlets than the others, it also more aggressively promoted articles from some of the most radical media outlets in America. As the fourth most-widely viewed news site in America, its bias and reach have an enormous impact on American politics and culture.  The Media Research Center tracked Yahoo News’s top 20 daily stories each morning during the month of February (totaling 560 stories) and found that the digital news gatekeeper propped up even more articles from left-leaning outlets (346) than the news sites operated by Apple, Google and Microsoft, while consistently suppressing right-leaning outlets. It also heavily leaned on radical leftist media outlets such as Salon (51) and The New Republic (16).   MRC’s Findings: Yahoo News is the most radical of the Big Four News Apps, promoting left-leaning outlets 87% of the time in its February morning editions. Yahoo News’s promotion of leftist outlets eclipsed the other Big Four News Apps during the month, which includes Apple News (75%), Google News (65%) and Microsoft’s MSN (54%). Yahoo News relied on radical leftist media outlets like Salon (51 articles), The New Republic (16 articles), Al Jazeera (1) and HuffPost (1). Yahoo News has consistently promoted the most radical leftist media outlets since MRC began tracking the morning editions of the Big Four News Apps on November 1, 2025: Salon (149), The New Republic (97), The Daily Beast (5), Rolling Stone (4) and Al Jazeera (2). Yahoo has massive reach. When combining its news (73.9M) and finance (135.6M) sites, the digital news gatekeeper amassed 209.5 million site visits in January 2026, according to Press Gazette. “Don’t overlook Yahoo’s ability to impact the narrative—and always from the left,” warned MRC President David Bozell. “Far from forgotten, Yahoo is the leftist boogeyman hiding in plain sight, and its massive reach and reliance on some of the worst of the worst leftist media outlets underscores its bias problem. Yahoo, like its Big Four News App counterparts, is harming Americans with its blatant agenda by providing an imbalance of coverage that overwhelmingly favors the left.”   Yahoo News Is the Most Radical of the Big Four News Apps Yahoo News ran a total of 397 AllSides-rated top stories in the month of February. Of these, 346 (87%) were from left-leaning outlets, a significantly higher percentage of left-leaning stories than Apple News (75%), Google News (64.5%) and Microsoft’s MSN (55%).  While Apple News and Google News are notorious for sidelining right-leaning outlets, Yahoo News produced even more leftist stories as a percentage of total articles from AllSides-rated outlets than these competitors by more aggressively squeezing out “center” outlets.  Not only did Yahoo News highlight more left-leaning stories in its top morning headlines for the month of February, it also relied heavily on some of the most radical leftist outlets. This included outlets such as Salon, The New Republic, Al Jazeera and HuffPost. Among the left-leaning article headlines, Yahoo News pushed the following: “Abolish ICE? Absolutely — and DHS too,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 28. “A wake-up call for white Americans,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 1. “How to Dismantle a Concentration Camp: Trump’s drive to build a network of detention centers is being met with some robust public resistance[,]” by The New Republic, promoted Feb. 28. “Minneapolis showed how to fight ICE and win,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 13. “Donald Trump is still weird,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 7. “Trump’s Fury at Canada Backfires in Surprise Blow to GOP’s 2026 Hopes,” by The New Republic, promoted Feb. 28. In February 2026, Yahoo News’s top stories only included articles from AllSides-rated “center” outlets six percent of the time, a paltry figure when compared to the other three digital news gatekeepers. Microsoft’s MSN featured stories from center outlets about 34% of the time, with Google News right behind at approximately 33%. Meanwhile, Apple News — which ran only 2% articles from right-leaning outlets in February — could have easily taken the top spot for left-leaning articles, but instead chose articles from center outlets about 23% of the time, nearly four times more frequently than Yahoo News. Yahoo News Has Consistently Promoted the Most Radical Leftist Outlets While the quantity of left-leaning stories published by Yahoo News is without equal, its emphasis on the most radical outlets is also unparalleled. Yahoo News ran a disproportionate number of stories from radical leftist outlets such as Salon, The New Republic and others, which do not even pretend to be balanced or neutral, instead leaning into highly partisan, politically divisive stories. Salon and The New Republic alone accounted for more stories on Yahoo News than all right-leaning stories combined in February. Particularly biased leftist headlines used since November 1, 2025 when MRC Free Speech America began tracking the Big Four News Apps included some blatantly biased stories:  “MAGA loves bad dads,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 16, 2026. “Trump using immigration to subvert the election, official says,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 18, 2026. “Billionaire Jamie Dimon Smacks Down Trump Goon: ‘Grow Up,’ by The Daily Beast, promoted Dec. 8 and Dec. 9, 2025. “Under Trump, workplace harassment can now go unpunished,” by Salon, promoted Jan. 23, 2026. “Trump is something worse than a fascist,” by Salon, promoted Jan. 15, 2026. “JD Vance doesn’t believe in free speech,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 17, 2026. “Why Trump’s creepy emails work for MAGA faithful,” by Salon, promoted Feb. 24, 2026. “Ted Cruz Freaks Out on Fox News About Election Disaster,” by The New Republic, promoted Nov. 6, 2025. “Stories like these sound like the campaign rhetoric coming straight from the Democratic Party,” said MRC Free Speech America Director Michael Morris. “It is getting more and more difficult to tell the difference between partisan propaganda and so-called ‘news’ from the elitist media. It is no wonder why the American public no longer trusts the media.” Yahoo News Still Has Massive Reach Yahoo News (ranked 17th) and Yahoo Finance (ranked 6th) combined for 209,500,000 website visits in the month of January 2026, according to the Press Gazette. Together, this makes Yahoo the fourth most visited news outlet in the U.S. Such a prominent news aggregator should be providing a less partisan, more balanced array of news to its audience. But it does not. Yahoo News published a total of only 29 stories from right-leaning outlets, a mere 7% of the AllSides-rated top stories it promoted in the mornings throughout February. Since all of these 29 stories were from Fox News, Yahoo News essentially banned every other right-leaning outlet in the world. It published no stories from the New York Post, Breitbart, The Washington Times, The Federalist, the Washington Examiner or The Daily Wire, to name a few. Yahoo News highlighted approximately twelve times more left-leaning than right-leaning stories, a far cry from balanced news. According to a report from the Reuters Institute, “engagement with traditional media sources such as TV, print, and news websites continues to fall, while dependence on social media, video platforms, and online aggregators grows,” particularly in the United States. Indeed, according to Pew Research Center, 86% of Americans turn to their digital devices for news “at least sometimes.” Methodology: During the time period Feb. 1 - 28, 2026, MRC researchers examined the top 20 stories featured on Yahoo News each day at approximately 8:30 AM ET. MRC researchers used the AllSides media bias ratings, which categorize an outlet as “left,” “lean left,” “center,” “lean right” or “right” to determine the overall bias presented by Apple News and analyzed the results.  Free speech is under attack!
