Willie Nelson Bought A Texas Golf Course Next To His Recording Studio In The Late 1970s, & It’s Still Open To This Day

Simply put, Willie Nelson is one of best businessmen in the history of the world. At 92-years-old (some might argue he’s 92-years-young), Nelson is still touring and performing live for his fans. He also just recently launched a business that’s now worth millions, and on top of that, he’s one of the most influential artists to have ever walked the Earth. But one of the coolest contributions he’s made to the world is a little piece of property called “Willie Nelson’s Cut ‘N Putt.” Also known as the the Pedernales Country Club, the 9-hole course is located in Lake Travis, Texas, about 29 miles west of Austin (described as “8 songs away” by Willie). The course was originally designed and built in 1968 by a man named Frank Howard. Just over a decade later, Willie Nelson bought the 9-hole loop and made the club house his own recording studio. The first project released from that studio was his 1983 album Tougher Than Leather, as well as his collaboration with Merle Haggard, Pancho and Lefty, later that same year. And the houses and condos that sit around the course are home to a lot of Willie Nelson’s family, friends, staff and roadies. Lukas Nelson, an avid golfer and the son of Willie, sat down for a podcast episode of the The Erik Anders Lang Show a while back, and in that conversation, he talked about the golf course and why Willie wanted to purchase it: “It was right next to the studio that he records in, so he liked to be able to cut a track, and then while they’re doing the engineering and mixing everything, he goes and plays nine holes and comes back and listens to it. Cut and putt, you cut a track and go out… cut a track and then go play.” I’d expect nothing less from the great Willie Nelson. He really just went out and bought a golf course so he could kill time while his songs were being mixed. If that’s not the dream life, I don’t know what is. And the Cut ‘N Putt is still open to this day, and open to public play – as well as offering memberships. The best part about the golf course? That’d be the unique set of rules that the Willie Nelson-owned golfing spot boasts: Willie Nelson’s Cut ‘N Putt Rules 1) When another player is shooting, no player should talk, whistle, hum, clink coins, or pass gas. 2) Don’t play until the group in front is out of the way. 3) Excessive displays of affection are discouraged. Violators must replace divots and will be penalized five strokes. 4) Replace divots, smooth footprints in bunkers, brush backtrail with branches, park car under brush, and have the office tell your spouse you’re in a conference. 5) Let faster groups play through. 6) On the putting green, don’t step on another’s line. 7) “Freebies” are not recommended for players with short putts. 8) No more than twelve in your foursome. 9) Gambling is forbidden, of course, unless you’re stuck or you need a legal deduction for charitable or educational expenses. 10) All carts are not allowed within 20 ft. of traps or aprons surrounding greens. 11) No bikinis, mini-skirts, skimpy see-through, or sexually exploitative attire allowed. Except on women. 12) Please leave course in the condition in which you would like for it to be found. Here’s a look at the course from a Golf Channel featured on it from a couple of years back: The post Willie Nelson Bought A Texas Golf Course Next To His Recording Studio In The Late 1970s, & It’s Still Open To This Day first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
