“The Late Show” Host Stephen Colbert Reveals What He Will Do Next As His Show Is Set To End In May

Lord of the Rings fans might not be happy about this. The Late Night Show host, Stephen Colbert, who has been vocal about his disdain towards President Trump, is set to leave his show in May. Now, Colbert has revealed what he will do next. The Late Show host has announced he is planning on co-writing the next Lord of the Rings movie. Fox News had the full scoop on Colbert’s plans: Late-night host Stephen Colbert revealed in a video announcement Tuesday that he will co-write the next “Lord of the Rings” movie after his program ends in May. “You know what the books mean to me and what your films mean to me, but the thing I found myself reading over and over again were the six chapters early on in the ‘Fellowship’ that y’all never developed into the first movie back in the day,” Colbert said in a video with Peter Jackson, the director of the hit “Lord of the Rings” movies. Colbert said the next film would be based on “Fog on the Barrow-downs,” chapter eight of “The Fellowship of the Ring,” the first installment in the fantasy trilogy from J.R.R. Tolkien. Colbert, Philippa Boyens and Peter McGee will write the script for the film, which is titled “The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past,” according to Deadline. Colbert’s “The Late Show” is set to end on May 21. CBS announced in 2025 that Colbert’s program would be canceled this spring. The network said at the time it was “purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.” The liberal late-night host addressed rumors about his next move during an appearance on fellow late-night host Seth Meyers’ show in January. Meyers brought up the rumor about Colbert running for office after noting the others, which included a $13.5 million deal with Netflix, which Colbert quipped was “not enough money.” I don’t think anyone will miss this: The “Vax-Scene” by Stephen Colbert This might possibly just be the most retarded segment in the entire history of television. pic.twitter.com/BrTEJjtyHe — Gain of Fauci (@DschlopesIsBack) July 18, 2025 Colbert was recently under fire for interviewing Democrat Senate candidate James Talarico, per PBS: Stephen Colbert’s comments that network executives pulled his interview with Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico over fears it would violate regulatory guidance from the Trump administration has prompted a conversation about the rules governing how media outlets treat political coverage. The concern about the interview, which the late-night host referenced in his Monday night show and later posted in full online, stems from a requirement that broadcast stations give equal time to political candidates when they appear on-air. Although there are multiple exemptions to the provision, the Trump administration through the Federal Communications Commission — which regulates the nation’s airwaves — has been moving to clamp down specifically on programs like Colbert’s, which the agency has suggested may be “motivated by partisan purposes.” “He was supposed to be here, but we were told in no uncertain terms by our network’s lawyers, who called us directly, that we could not have him on the broadcast,” Colbert said on his program, “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.” In a statement issued Tuesday, CBS said Colbert’s show “was provided legal guidance that the broadcast could trigger the FCC equal-time rule for two other candidates” in the March 3 Democratic primary, “and presented options for how the equal time for other candidates could be fulfilled.” Thereafter, the network noted, it was decided “to present the interview through its YouTube channel with on-air promotion on the broadcast rather than potentially providing the equal-time options.”
