The name has never been about the Moon’s color. It comes from Phlox subulata, a creeping wildflower also called moss pink that carpets the ground across eastern North America in early spring. It was one of the first flowers to appear after the long winter, and Indigenous peoples, particularly Algonquin-speaking communities, used it to mark the season.
