Strangers Donate to Helicopter Pilot to Find Dog Left Behind During Rescue Mission

Jessica Johnston went hiking in New Zealand with her dog Molly on March 24, 2026. She never expected the day to end the way that it did. Unfortunately, Jessica fell from a waterfall into the wild New Zealand bush, sustaining significant injuries, NBC News reported. When the rescue team arrived, they couldn’t find Molly. Sadly, there was no time to wait as Jessica had some pretty serious injuries. Losing the dog devastated Jessica and Matt Newton, the owner-operator of Precision Helicopters New Zealand. He was determined to find Molly. To go back out, he needed help. Donors gave him around $6,300 USD to help fund the mission. That allowed three hours in the helicopter using thermal-imaging equipment. “We struck jackpot within about an hour,” Matt said. “As we made our way up the river, we could see the dog in the thermal and then we could visually see it.” Molly and Jessica were reunited, and Matt shared the incredible video footage of the rescue online. “Thank you to everybody who donated & volunteered to help, the success of saving Molly would not have been possible without this joint effort. What a happy ending to reunite her with Jess after her accident,” Matt wrote. “1 week lost in the wild, Molly will be happy to be home.” “That dear beautiful dog was so happy to see her best friend again. I just love her. I bow to you for rescuing her,” someone wrote. “In one of the worst weeks in the history of the world this kept me believing in the human race…just soooo good,” another person added.
