There’s a new project looking to adapt Octavia Butler’s Parable of the Sower into a movie. Today, Variety reported that Warner Bros. is moving forward with a feature adaptation, with director Melina Matsoukas, whose previous credits include Insecure, Master of None, and several Beyoncé projects, at the helm.
This isn’t the first film adaptation of the story to be developed in recent years. Back in 2021, A24 announced that they were working on a movie version of Butler’s iconic story, with Garrett Bradley on board to direct. We haven’t heard anything about that project since then, which means it ultimately fell by the wayside.
Parable of the Sower, which was first published in 1993, has had a resurgence in recent years, making it onto the New York Times Bestsellers list for the first time in 2020 for obvious reasons when one learns the plot.
The dystopian novel is set in 2024 in a world full of chaos, anarchy, and destruction. It follows Lauren Olamina, a 15-year-old who has hyperempathy, a condition that makes her extremely sensitive to the pain of others. Lauren lives with her family in a gated Southern California community that is struggling to stay together in a crumbling world. When fires destroy her community and kill her family, she gathers other refugees around her and the religion she’s developed known as Earthseed.
(Side note: I listened to Sower in the summer of 2020, where I sat in a sealed room with a 3-month-old since wildfires made the air outside dangerous to breathe and the pandemic made going anywhere else with a newborn impossible. It’s a phenomenal book, but if you find yourself in a similar situation and are looking for something to read, maybe save Sower for another time.)
Butler followed up Sower with the sequel, Parable of the Talents. It seems plausible that an adaptation of that book may eventually happen if/when this Warner Bros. project makes it to theaters. No news yet, however, on when Sower will make its way to production, much less to a screen near you. [end-mark]
