Wife Of Spanish Prime Minister Faces Multiple Charges After Investigation
The wife of Pedro Sánchez, Spain’s prime minister, faces multiple corruption charges after a two-year investigation into her professional life.
A Madrid court on Monday indicted Begoña Gómez with four charges, including embezzlement, influence peddling, corruption in business dealings and misappropriation of funds.

Euractiv explained further:
Following a two-year investigation, Judge Juan Carlos Peinado ruled that Gómez should stand trial for alleged misconduct during her tenure as co-director of two master’s programmes and a special chair at Madrid’s Complutense University, and potentially appear before a jury.
According to the court ruling quoted by national broadcaster RTVE, the judge stated that precisely because of her status as the prime minister’s wife, which benefited the expansion, funding and operations of her university chair, decisions were made that “could have been obtained through a unique exploitation of her relational position.”
The investigating judge is also indicting a former advisor in Sánchez’s office, Cristina Álvarez, whom he accuses of the same offences as Gómez, and businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés for influence peddling and corruption.
Gómez denies any wrongdoing, and the prime minister has defended his spouse’s innocence, controversially accusing Spanish judges of political bias on national TV.
According to The Telegraph, Spain’s left-wing government called the investigation a politically-motivated “fishing expedition.”
However, it’s not the first time someone near the country’s prime minister has faced an investigation.
“A week ago, his former transport minister went on trial, also for corruption,” the outlet stated.

More from The Telegraph:
José Luis Ábalos is accused of receiving kickbacks on sales of PPE to government departments during the Covid-19 pandemic.
When Ms Gómez was placed under investigation in April 2024, Mr Sánchez took a five-day leave of absence from public duties to reflect on how to respond to what he called slurs from a “mud-flinging machine” which he says comprises of Right-wing media outlets and conservative members of the judiciary.
Mr Sánchez elected to continue in power but has seen a series of corruption cases sprout up around family members and Socialist politicians.
His wife’s case centres on allegations that she used her position to secure a post at Madrid’s Complutense University in charge of Master’s degrees in business studies.
Although Judge Peinado has found no evidence that Ms Gómez benefited directly from professional connections owing to her position, he argued that her associate on the Master’s courses, businessman Juan Carlos Barrabés, had been given preferential access to public contracts.
Mr Barrabés has also been charged, as has Ms Gómez’s personal assistant.
