Name That Party: ABC Leaves Out One Massive Detail From Latest Swalwell Report
On Monday, ABC’s Good Morning America featured a full story on Democratic Congressman and cable news denizen Eric Swalwell (CA) dropping out of the California gubernatorial race amid allegations of sexual assault, misconduct, and rape, continuing a news cycle that, like a coordinated research dump, began Friday with stories on CNN and in the San Francisco Chronicle.
However, see if you can spot what was missing from the report by co-host and former Clinton official George Stephanopoulos and senior political correspondent Rachel Scott:
Notice what's missing in this early Monday Eric Swalwell story on ABC's 'Good Morning America'

Yes, dear readers, ABC went the entire story without directly labeling Swalwell a Democrat. The most they could do was add a (D) to the lower third in the soundbite of Swalwell denouncing the allegations. There were also no questions either about what Democrats knew and when did they know it about the creep.
Starting Saturday, every lead morning and evening show on ABC, CBS, and NBC have covered Swalwell’s demise and, until this omission, all ten newscasts that mentioned Swalwell identified his party. The same went for Monday’s CBS Mornings and NBC’s Today.
The two-minute-and-34-second piece began with Stephanopoulos:
We have more breaking news overnight. California Representative Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for governor following sexual assault allegations. Senior political correspondent Rachel Scott us on Capitol Hill where this could have a ripple effect. Good morning, Rachel.
A virulent Trump hater, Scott tip-toed her way through the piece, saying “just a few days ago, Eric Swalwell was seen as the leading candidate, a frontrunner in California’s race for governor, but now he has suspended his campaign amid these bombshell allegations.”
“Overnight Congressman Eric Swawell suspended his campaign for California governor amid disturbing allegations of sexual assault and misconduct...Swalwell’s bid for governor was in peril after at least four women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior to the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN,” she continued, adding her network had “not been able to independently verify those claims.”
Instead, they played sound from one accuser speaking to CNN and then relaying they did speak with one woman who’s gone on-the-record to allege Swalwell sent her an unsolicited nude photo after she sought his help for a Capitol Hill job in 2021.
Following the token soundbite from Swalwell, Scott pointed out the open letter from “[m]ore than 50 former staffers also calling on Swalwell to resign” and that, no matter what happens, “Swalwell’s name will still appear on the ballot.”
This was the closest Scott came to suggesting Swalwell’s political party:
And George mentioned the ripple effects. Well, one of the things happening here on Capitol Hill as the House returns into session, you have Republicans who are trying to force a vote to expel him from Congress. Even some Democrats say they are willing to support that. It’s unclear if it will pass[.]
The Swalwell story was one of the show’s opening teases and, courtesy of fill-in co-host Rebecca Jarvis, also omitted the party ID: “Breaking overnight, one of the leading candidates for governor of California suspending his campaign. Congressman Eric Swalwell, responding to allegations of sexual assault and misconduct.”
Ironically, Scott herself filled in as a co-host on Sunday’s Good Morning America and said Swalwell was a Democrat in the copy they fed into the teleprompter for her to read: “All right, we turn now to the growing calls for Democratic Congressman Eric Swalwell to end his bid for California governor. And this morning, a source telling ABC News Swalwell is facing a criminal investigation.”

GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS: We have more breaking news overnight. California Representative Eric Swalwell suspended his campaign for governor following sexual assault allegations. Senior political correspondent Rachel Scott us on Capitol Hill where this could have a ripple effect. Good morning, Rachel.
RACHEL SCOTT: It certainly could, George. Good morning to you. Well, just a few days ago, Eric Swalwell was seen as the leading candidate, a frontrunner in California’s race for governor. But now he has suspended his campaign amid these bombshell allegations. Overnight Congressman Eric Swawell suspended his campaign for California governor amid disturbing allegations of sexual assault and misconduct. Swalwell writing on social media, “I am deeply sorry for mistakes and judgment I’ve made in my past. I will fight this serious and false allegations that I’ve been made, but that’s my fight, not a campaign.” Swalwell’s bid for governor was in peril after at least four women accused him of sexual assault and inappropriate behavior to the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN. ABC News has not been able to independently verify those claims. One former staffer telling CNN Swalwell sexually assaulted her twice, once back in 2019 when she worked for his California district office, the second time in New York City in 2024.
FORMER SWALWELL STAFFER [on CNN]: I can recall I was pushing him off of me saying no.
SCOTT: A source telling ABC that the Manhattan district attorney is now investigating that allegation. The other woman accusing Swalwell of sending inappropriate messages, including explicit photos. Alison Marco telling ABC News she first met Swalwell in 2021 when she was looking for a job on Capitol Hill and that after they message her several weeks, he sent her an unsolicited nude photo. She told ABC and made her feel gross. Swalwell is denying all the allegations. He and his attorney did not immediately respond to ABC News’s request for comment.
CONGRESSMAN ERIC SWALWELL (D-CA): These allegations of sexual assault are flat false. They’re absolutely false. They did not happen. They have never happened. And I will fight them with everything that I have.
SCOTT: More than 50 former staffers also calling on Swalwell to resign saying in a statement, “we are appalled by his actions,” adding “justice is not an option. Accountability is not negotiable.” So, despite dropping out of the way, Swalwell’s name will still appear on the ballot. And George mentioned the ripple effects. Well, one of the things happening here on Capitol Hill as the House returns into session, you have Republicans who are trying to force a vote to expel him from Congress. Even some Democrats say they are willing to support that. It’s unclear if it will pass, Michael.
MICHAEL STRAHAN: Yeah, we’ll see what — if that does happen. Rachel, thank you.
