Stacey Abrams on MS NOW: 'Racist Fascist' Republicans Bringing Back Jim Crow

On Saturday’s The Weekend on MS NOW, Stacey Abrams was given the full VIP treatment. Co-host Eugene Daniels introduced her as “Madam Leader,” and the panel kept the unctuous title going throughout the segment — even though her time as minority leader in the Georgia House ended nine years ago. When it comes to fellow leftists, flattery apparently has no expiration date at MS NOW. Abrams accused Republicans of trying to “legalize the restoration of Jim Crow,” cbranded Republican leadership “racist, fascist” and “vicious.” And the Supreme court? They had the "same ethos" as the Supreme Court justices in the Dred Scott case, which denied citizenship to all black Americans in 1857. Earlier in the show, Jonathan Capehart warned that GOP redistricting could reduce Democratic representation across the South by 50% by 2028, complete with a helpful map. Maps? We’ve got a map right here, Jonathan. Twenty-one congressional districts across the six New England states. Republicans make up roughly 40% of the voters in the region — yet hold zero seats. Zero. But that kind of map never seems to trigger the same outrage on MS NOW. Abrams' operations have raked in hundreds of millions of dollars, making her a millionaire many times over. The segment was pure MS NOW: lavish titles for Democrats, apocalyptic Jim Crow warnings, selective map outrage, and the implication that only one side is playing fair. Here's the transcript. MS NOW The Weekend 5/2/26 8:02 am EDT JONATHAN CAPEHART: Yesterday, multiple voting rights groups sued Louisiana over its election pause, and advocacy groups in other states have begun legal action as well.  It remains to be seen what level of redistricting southern states can get away with before the midterms, but by 2028, when all is said and done, Democratic representation across the South—you can see it there on the map—will likely be reduced by 50%.  . . .  EUGENE DANIELS: Joining us now, Stacey Abrams, who wrote that, founder of Fair Fight, and 2022 Democratic candidate for governor of Georgia.  Madam Leader, thank you very much for joining The Weekend, as always. Um, I feel like we, the royal we, us in D.C., in the media, the lawmakers, we often ask so much of the American people, right? We just had a conversation about what the American people can do to overcome this.  And I'm finding myself frustrated, as I think a lot of Americans are, especially folks that watch this show, that they keep fighting, they keep getting out there, they keep voting, they keep trying to stop the things that are happening, and yet they found themselves powerless.  . . .  STACEY ABRAMS: And I want to start by saying, the power is the point. We're not powerless. In fact, we are so not powerless that they are trying to legalize the restoration of Jim Crow.  That's what's happening here, because our power was working. We had laws across this country that allowed black and brown citizens to be fully realized as members of this society.  We have the Americans with Disabilities Act. We have the Fair Labor Standards Act. We have FMLA. We used to have bodily autonomy for women. We were on the way to a multiracial, multiethnic, multigenerational, pluralistic democracy.  And the racist, fascist, leadership that starts in the White House but extends to the Supreme Court, members of Congress, and to the state and local level, they're angry about that. They're angry about the that the people hold.  And what they understand that we sometimes forget is that power is never completely won or lost. It is a tug of war, and we were tugging too hard. And that is why we've seen this vicious and fast, lightning-fast stripping of our power.  But they've been at it for years. And the work that I do, the work that so many of us are out doing, is about restoring our belief that we are entitled to that power.  . . .  I'm loud. And I'm aggressive, but I'm not alone . . . We've got to fight these maps. We cannot take as a fait accompli that they have won simply because the Supreme Court said it.  Because the same Supreme Court, different composition, same ethos did Dred Scott.
