Koe Wetzel Says His Songwriting Has Matured But Fans Should Still Expect ‘The Night Champion’ To Be Rowdy

Don’t worry… Koe Wetzel says The Night Champion is still going to be a rowdy record. The country music star recently joined the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast to talk about how becoming a dad has changed his life for the better, how Koe Wetzel Day came to be, growing closer to God during this time of his life, and how excited his grandma would be for him to make a gospel album. The Texas native also discussed his friends not recognizing him anymore because he’s a truly changed man, how he and Parker McCollum have been back in the studio together, new music that’s on the way, and his upcoming album being written before he became a father. And let’s dive into that very last part, shall we? By now, I’m sure you’ve heard that Wetzel is dropping his new album – The Night Champion – on June 12 (if you are a frequent reader of Whiskey Riff, you’d also know why he named it that). When we spoke to the country star on the Whiskey Riff Raff podcast, he let us know that his life has changed a ton since he became a father. But he wanted to be clear that, though some dad songs might be on the way, his forthcoming album was put together long before he even knew that he would become a parent: “I’ve been writing a lot more about that. This last record, everything was written and pretty much done before she came. You’ll hear it in the record. I think a lot of people are gonna be like, ‘How’s this dude a dad? How can he say that everything has changed?’ after listening to the music.  A lot of it was written and put together before my daughter came along. I think my thought process was a lot different for this record than before. It’s been almost a year since the record has been finished. We’ve been sitting on it for a year. So I think everything is… I’m in a lot different headspace right now than I was whenever I wrote this record.” So before fans cue The Night Champion up next month, they should a) prepare themselves for another rowdy album and b) make sure not to give Koe any grief about the contents of the songs. If fans are interested in the “Dad Era” of Koe Wetzel, it sounds like that’s on the way. He told us later in the interview that the music he’s working on now (yes, he’s already got new music in the works before his upcoming album drops) is much more mature than his past discography: “I find myself writing a lot more for her. And kind of just… the outlook that I have on life right now is a lot different than my past five projects. It’s not about the party and the hell-raising that it’s been about for a long time. The music is maturing a whole lot more. This new record is rowdy. If you’ve been a fan from the beginning, if you are a new fan from the last record, we’ve got a little bit of everything for everybody.” @whiskeyriff @Koe Wetzel #whiskeyriff #whiskeyriffraff ♬ original sound – Whiskey Riff You can hear more from Koe Wetzel by checking out the interview on YouTube or making sure to download the podcast on Apple Podcasts by searching “Whiskey Riff Raff” or by clicking here.
