Elton John Says Vision Loss Completely Changed His Songwriting Process
Elton John is preparing to release a brand-new album, but the legendary musician says the project came together in a completely different way than any of his previous records. The singer revealed that ongoing vision problems forced him to rethink the creative process he had relied on throughout his entire career.
Despite the challenges, the music icon says the unexpected change actually opened a new creative chapter for him. Instead of slowing down, the health setback inspired him to experiment with a fresh songwriting style that he now describes as exciting and deeply rewarding.

According to Ultimate Classic Rock, the singer discussed the issue while accepting the Glenn Gould Prize in Toronto. He explained that he traditionally writes songs by reading lyrics first and then composing music around them, but his recent vision difficulties made that process far more difficult.

Elton John’s vision problems began after he suffered a severe eye infection in 2024, which significantly reduced sight in his right eye. The singer previously admitted the situation felt devastating, especially because reading lyrics had always played such a major role in his songwriting routine. Instead of giving up, however, the musician decided to reverse his entire creative process. He now writes melodies first and adds lyrics afterward, something he says he had never done before during his decades-long career in music.

Elton John’s vision struggles also reminded him how essential music remains to his life. During the speech, he explained that creating and listening to music still drives him emotionally and creatively, even after releasing more than 30 studio albums. The artist admitted that without music, he would feel spiritually empty. Although he could easily retire after decades of success, he insists the desire to create never disappears because music continues giving meaning and energy to his everyday life.
