Zach Top Joins Marcus King For Surprise Performance Of Charlie Daniels’ “Trudy” In Nashville
You never know who’s going to pop up in Nashville.
Zach Top seems to be everywhere these days. Riding the highs of his debut album last year and his highly-successful sophomore effort this year, Ain’t In It For My Health, the Washington native has simply flown through the ranks in country music over the past two years.
Of course, this was highlighted on a national scale the past few months when he not only took home Best New Artist at the CMA Awards in November, which he accepted with a Coors Banquet in hand, but also when he scored his first-career Grammy back in February. In turn, Top became the first-ever winner of the brand-new Best Traditional Country Album category, winning it with Ain’t In It For My Health.
Despite being one of the hottest stars in the genre lately, the Washington native has been a frequent flyer at nearly every event possible lately, especially when it comes to Nashville. After making an impromptu last month and performing Ronnie Milsap’s classic, “Don’t You Ever Get Tired (Of Hurting Me),” at Skinny Dennis in East Nashville, Top would return to Music City for another surprise appearance — this time with Marcus King.
King, who will be opening up for Top for multiple dates this summer, took his Darling Blue Pt. 2 Tour to Nashville over the weekend. After Willow Avalon and Penelope Road opened the night, it looked like a pretty standard concert for King all things considered. In addition to performing hits like “Good Run,” “Honky Tonk Hell” and “Carolina Honey,” the South Carolina would also break out a handful of covers such as Waylon Jennings’ “Good Hearted Woman,” Little Feat’s “Willin'” and Candi Staton’s “Good Hearts Run Free.”
The biggest moment (and cover) of the night came at the very end when King called upon Top, as well as Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr, for a performance of Charlie Daniels’ severely underrated track, “Trudy.”
In case you’re somehow unfamiliar with “Trudy,” it appeared on the Charlie Daniels Band’s 1974 album, Fire on the Mountain, which contains hits like “Long Haired Country Boy” and “The South’s Gonna Do It.” Though it was never released as a single, the track has remained one of Daniel’s most popular deep cuts, recently being covered by Jamey Johnson and Randy Houser back in 2024.
Given how jazz and blues-inspired the track is, King absolutely crushed the cover, showing off his powerhouse vocals effortlessly. Throw in some killer guitar work from Top, and you have an all-time performance from the pair. If you’re a fan of the original, you will not be disappointed.
