“Blake Shelton Personality”: Riley Green Reveals The 2 Appearances That Got Him His ‘The Voice’ Gig
I might actually watch The Voice this season for the first time ever.
Riley Green will join the show as a judge for Season 30 of the reality singing competition show, where he will be joined by fellow judges Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Queen Latifah. He says he just met Queen Latifah for the first time last weekend, and he has yet to meet Adam, so fans will really get to know each of them, and their dynamic as a whole, in realtime when the show actually airs sometime this fall.
And while he’s never done anything like this for in terms of judging a reality TV singing competition, Riley did make his acting debut on the TV show Marshals a few months ago, and during an appearance on Country Countdown USA, he says he felt like he was already busy before Marshals, so now, it’s going to all be taken up a notch:
“I feel that way. I’ve taken on a lot of new ventures. I wasn’t hurting for things to do already. But it’s been a lot of fun. I got a taste of it with Marshals. I thought I was busy before that.”
He also revealed that there were two different appearances that led him to secure The Voice gig, which will definitely bring him a ton of exposure and introduce him to a much more mainstream crowd, even though he’s already a country star.
The first was a Q&A he did before he performed at the Grammy Museum in LA, and the second was a spot he did on Jimmy Fallon, when he taught him how to use a duck call, and producers got to see his personality on full display. They were apparently looking for someone kind of like former judge Blake Shelton in terms of the humor spot, and after watching him at those two events, execs were sold:
“There were mentions that there was interest that I might be a possible candidate. We were in LA and I did a show at the Grammy Museum, and we did a Q&A before the show. We had a good rapport, and that got me the job.
The personality that Blake had is what they’re looking for. I also did a spot on Jimmy Fallon, where I got to visit with him and teach him a duck call. Those two things got me the job.”
Riley definitely has a great sense of humor, similar to Shelton, which you can hear in a lot of his music, and so I think he’s a great choice for the role, if you will, and it will be really interesting to see how he goes about all of this as he mentors young, up-and-coming artists from all genres.
While they haven’t started filming yet, Riley says he’s met The Voice team and he will be watching episodes of Blake from the Vice and Luke Bryan on American Idol to help him figure out how to go about all of it:
“They haven’t. We start filming in the next couple months. I don’t know what to expect except I know how the chair works. I haven’t met any of the other coaches yet. Kelly called me when I got the job. She’s a country fan, and I know she’s covered some of my songs.
I’m not sure about any of it, it’s such a different thing. But I’ve met the team, and I know what they need from me. It’s helpful to watch Blake & Luke Bryan, because now I know how to go about it, and I’m excited about the coaching part of it.”
Riley has obviously don a ton of media and live shows, but being on a major network television show is a whole different ball game, so to speak, and I have no doubt he will represent country music very well.
On top of that new gig, Riley will release a new album called That’s Just Me on September 18th, and he already released the lead single “Think As You Drunk,” which he says has a music video coming soon that he filmed a this Nashville bar, Duck Blind:
“‘I Ain’t As Think As You Drunk I Am.’ It’s a funny song. It’s gonna be a lot of fun. We shot the video outside my Nashville bar The Duck Blind. It’s nice to have a bar that you can’t get thrown out of. ‘My Way’ was a song that was featured in Marshals, and that’s on the album.
So is ‘Think As You Drunk.’ The album’s done. We’re gonna be putting songs out from the album early, and then looking at announcing the album before too long with a date for everybody.”
The tracklist is yet-to-be released, so stay tuned, because I have v feeling there might be a cool collab or two on there too…
