NBC Fawns Over ‘Emotional,’ ‘Ticked Off’ Scott Pelley Ripping CBS Bosses in NYT Interview

While ABC has been surprisingly silent, NBC’s lead newscasts of Today and NBC Nightly News haven’t been able to get enough of the CBS News drama, so it was natural that, on Monday’s Today, the show had a full story boasting of his “emotional” interview to The New York Times this past weekend showing much he’s “ticked off” about his ouster and leveling “concerning new allegations.” “Ticked off. Scott Pelley speaking out in his first televised interview about his 60 Minutes firing...What he’s now saying about his dismissal. The new allegations he’s making against the network and how he feels about the other correspondents’ decision to stay,” co-host Savannah Guthrie boomed in the first of two teases. NBC's ‘Today’ was very excited about Scott Pelley's NYT interview trashing CBS News management... Savannah Guthrie: “Ticked off. McLaughlin camped out on the part when “Pelley alleged editorial interference” in “his February coverage of the killing of ICE protester Renee Good” and that “Weiss directed his team to make the protesters look more violent, and to describe Good as driving toward the officer who shot her.” While she did include a single sentence from a statement CBS News had sent denying this was political inference to help President Trump, she gushed the liberal reporter was “visibly shaken when asked about...scathing comments” Trump made, in which he said Pelley was “a stiff” and “part of this, you know, gang of crooked, stupid people that don’t care about our country.” McLaughlin spliced together two sentences from this longer clip below: “You become a journalist because you love the country. [SCREEN WIPE] There is no democracy without journalism.” Scott Pelley sobs when he argues he’s just like U.S. troops because both go to war to serve the country and might even be more important because “there is no democracy without journalism”… “Don’t care about the country? [CRYING] I’ve never worn the uniform, but I’ve been in… pic.twitter.com/omB9uteXFq — Curtis Houck (@CurtisHouck) June 7, 2026 Back live, McLaughlin trumpeted the mobster-like statement from remaining 60 Minutes correspondents Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, Jon Wertheim announcing they’d stay on the show while also trashing and threatening Bilton and Weiss. In addition, notice Guthrie seeming to express soft exasperation at Pelley’s insistence that he didn’t think he’d be fired for hurling vicious attacks at management (click “expand”): GUTHRIE: Erin, there had been so much speculation about the three remaining correspondents, whether they would stay or go. They made a decision. They issued a statement. MCLAUGHLIN: Yeah, that’s right. All three — Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker, Jon Wertheim — issued this joint statement, saying that they’re going to be staying put for now, that they do not want to see the story broadcast die while also pointedly saying “newsrooms are not supposed to be run like dictatorships.” Now, Pelley says he hasn’t talked to the remaining three since he was fired, but they previously had a conversation about the possibility of leaving. They decided to stay to uphold the principles of the broadcast. Pelley says he would have stayed had he not been fired. GUTHRIE: It’s an interesting interview because he said he didn’t expect to walk in his boss’s office, and be fired even after that fiery meeting, so it’s a fascinating interview.
