JUST IN: Sen. Lindsey Graham Cruises To Victory In South Carolina GOP Primary

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) has won the GOP primary for Senate in South Carolina. Graham defeated multiple challengers, with the biggest threat coming from businessman Mark Lynch. Graham secured enough of the vote to avoid a June 23 primary runoff and will face pediatrician Annie Andrews in November. In one campaign ad, a narrator said Trump “delivered on his promise to close the border” with Graham’s help, adding that Graham is “there for South Carolina, delivering for President Trump.” Trump also recently slammed Lynch as a “lunatic,” criticizing his support for GOP Rep. Thomas Massie of Kentucky, which Graham highlighted on the airwaves. The Graham campaign also attacked Lynch for past arrests on charges related to cocaine and driving under the influence. Lynch has said he sought treatment and “got clean and sober.” Lynch, meanwhile, argued that Graham has been in office for too long, saying the state was “done with attorneys and career politicians,” and he highlighted Graham’s past clashes with Trump. One ad from the Lynch campaign was solely footage of Trump slamming Graham back in 2016. Graham and Trump’s relationship has evolved since then, and the senator has become a close ally and frequent golf partner of the president. Graham also had the support of South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC). “I think we need people that know what the h*** they’re doing and can deliver, really. And that’s what it’s about, having somebody in Washington that can deliver for you and your family,” Graham said in a prior interview, according to The Hill. “If you think President Trump’s done a good job, I do too. He’s endorsed me, not my opponents, but me,” he continued. Graham quickly gained a double digit lead as the results poured in. The Palmetto State hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1998, when then-Sen. Ernest Hollings (D-S.C.) won reelection. The nonpartisan election handicapper Cook Political Report rates Graham’s seat as “solid Republican.”
