“He’s Definitely Too F****** Good To Be Here” — Matt Rife Says Morgan Wallen Joke Didn’t Land At The AMAs

It actually proved his point further when no one in the room got the joke. Comedian Matt Rife stopped by Theo Von’s This Past Weekend podcast this week, where they got into a discussion about Hollywood and award shoes in general, because Matt recently presented at the American Music Awards in the Breakthrough Country Artist category, which went to Sam Barber. But he couldn’t pass up the chance to bring up country music’s biggest star, Morgan Wallen, in the process… Morgan did not attend the fan-voted show, and Matt explained to Theo that he had his photographer Kyle dress up as “Morgan Fallen,” and he and he faked the crowd out by announcing that Morgan was in attendance: “Making his very first AMA appearance, Morgan Wallen.” The camera then cut to a guy with a mullet who bears a (very) slight resemblance to Morgan, with Matt then joking about his hatred for awards shows: “I’m kidding. Why would you even look? Of course that’s not him. He hates awards shows. He’ll never be here. He’s too busy selling out two shows on the moon, right now.” I mean, kinda sums up the absurdity of other awards shows not recognizing Morgan while he’s busy selling out stadiums… Morgan notably skipped both the ACM and CMA Awards this year, and has for several years now, and he and fellow artist HARDY even threw some shade at the increasingly-irrelevant awards show following his snub because neither one took home a trophy that night. Here’s the clip from Matt’s Instagram in case you haven’t seen it: View this post on Instagram Matt explained that wanted to do a bit where people thought Morgan was there, though he says it didn’t exactly land because Kyle looked so much like Morgan that some people thought it was actually him: “The bit was supposed to be that the camera goes to him, it’s so obviously not Morgan Wallen and that was going to be the bit. But he looked so much like him that people were like, ‘Okay, cool, Morgan Wallen is here.’ It completely f****** failed because he looked so much like him.” He says that some country outlets took the joke as a dig, when in reality, it was hyping Morgan up because he was explaining to everyone there that Morgan was “definitely too good to be there”: “All the country pages picked it up and everything, they’re like, ‘Oh, Matt Rife takes a dig at Morgan Wallen.’ I’m like, it’s the complete opposite. I’m saying he’s definitely too f****** good to be here. He is too good to be here. He’s selling out the moon. He gets snubbed on so many of these awards, I don’t get it.” Honestly, props to Matt for doing that on stage and basically making fun of the show he’s presenting at… though again, I’m not sure how many people there actually got it. Theo pointed out that he doesn’t think Morgan “cares” about those award shows, and Matt pointed out the obvious in that they don’t matter. Regardless of who gets what award, we all know that Morgan is the biggest thing in country music, and you could make a good argument that he’s one of the biggest acts in all of music right now… the sold out stadiums, the streaming numbers, it’s insane what he’s doing right now. “Well, I mean, what does it matter? You know you’re the Entertainer of the Year. Who the f*** else is going multiple stadium shows?” That’s pretty much all there is to it… I completely agree with them when it comes to the fact that these award shows truly don’t matter, yet they still continue to make themselves more irrelevant by icing out the biggest stars.
