Dolly Parton Calls Out Buc-ee’s During Opening Of Her Tennessean Travel Stop: “I Couldn’t Leave It To Beavers”
If the “Queen of Country Music” comes for the “King of Gas Stations” (Buc-ee Beaver himself), she best not miss.
Dolly Parton is already an icon for countless reasons (music, philanthropy, theme parks, etc). Yet in classic Dolly fashion, she wanted to continue to innovate and further her brand, so she decided to get into the gas station business. The country music star announced late last year that she was partnering with the team behind the Tennessean Travel Stop to rebrand its flagship Cornersville, Tennessee location to the first ever Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stop.
That location just celebrated its grand opening earlier today.
Dolly has previously said that she wanted to get into the gas station and truck stop business after spending years on the road as a touring artist. She plans on starting with this first location, and then expanding with more stops in the years to come:
“I have spent the bulk of my life on the road, and more specifically on a bus. All the years spent visiting greasy spoon cafes, truck stops, and roadside pit stops have given me an understanding of what traveler’s desire on the road.
Whether you are driving a truck, a bus, or a car, you want a place that feels like home and recharges you for the rest of your journey. I believe we will fill a void out there on the highways, all while bringing the heart and soul of Tennessee.”
Dolly’s Tennessean Travel Stops combine hospitality, retail, and entertainment elements, and as you might imagine, Dolly is the de facto mascot of the entire place. Her image and silhouette are on just about everything… which leads me to this question: Have you ever heard of or seen another gas station brand that sounds a whole lot like that? Maybe with a name that starts with a “B”?
Dolly Parton sure seems to know about Buc-ee’s, because during the ribbon cutting ceremony, she not-so-subtly took a jab at the gas station brand that’s been redefining the gas station and roadside bathroom experience over the last couple of years. She didn’t name drop Buc-ee’s, but she did mention their mascot, and boldly claimed that they don’t see the popular gas station brand as a competitor:
“I wanted to welcome all of you and say thank you for coming. We’re very excited about our truck stop: the Tennessean Travel Stop… I’m sure some of you are wondering why I wanted a truck stop. Well, I couldn’t leave it to beavers.
I had to throw my scrawny little self in there. We’re not trying to compete with anybody. We don’t think we’ll have to. We think we’re going to have everything that you want or need.”

Dolly Parton vs. Buc-ee’s… the rivalry that we didn’t know we needed.
Granted, Dolly did say that she and her Tennessean Travel Stop didn’t see Buc-ee’s as a competitor. For a second, I thought she meant that both places would be able to coexist rather peacefully. But then the country music legend followed it up with “We don’t think we’ll have to,” and that’s when I really knew that the gas station rivalry was on.
