President Trump Pledges Assistance After Two Major Earthquakes Devastate South America
In the aftermath of a pair of earthquakes in Venezuela on Wednesday, President Donald Trump quickly spread the word that America is “ready, willing, and able” to provide necessary assistance to those impacted by the natural disaster.
As The Hill reported, Trump addressed the matter late that evening in a social media post:
“The two major earthquakes that just hit the great people of Venezuela are both massive in scale and have left a devastating number of deaths,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help!”
A magnitude 7.2 earthquake hit roughly 14.3 miles southeast of Yumare, Venezuela, followed by 7.5 magnitude tremor, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). The second earthquake hit about 17.4 miles southeast of Yumare, the USGS noted.
Venezuelan President Delcy Rodríguez said in an address on state television early Thursday that more than 160 people have died and at least 971 were injured during the joint natural disasters, The Associated Press reported.
The USGS also outlined the likelihood of high casualties and damage from the disasters, noting the impact from the quakes is “likely widespread.”
Details about the aftermath of the quakes soon began to surface on social media:
Another building that probably hadn’t been rebuilt in decades due to the Communist Maduro, starts falling apart during the 7.2 earthquake in Caracas Venezuela.
There’s a huge probability that this same building completely fell during the 7.5 minutes later. #termoto https://t.co/1D2G1Jrb0I pic.twitter.com/29tFs5eagO

Axios had these details:
Officials reported buildings were destroyed or extensively damaged across Caracas and in several Venezuelan states.
Rodríguez said on social media that a state of emergency had been declared and she urged “all citizens to remain alert, safe, and as calm as possible.”
What we’re watching: As search and rescue efforts continued into Thursday, U.S. officials had already “mobilized a disaster assistance team and task force to deliver and coordinate critical assistance to the Venezuelan people,” according to Jeremy Lewin, under secretary for foreign assistance at the State Department.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X early Thursday that the U.S. was “immediately deploying search and rescue teams, medical resources, and humanitarian assistance to Venezuela.”
