MS NOW Calls Trump a 'Fascist,' Denies There Are Communist DSA Candidates

As the Democratic Party is taken over by radical democratic socialists across America, the Republican Party has begun sounding the alarm regarding the socialist shift. On the other hand, Monday's MS NOW Reports found itself more focused on attacking the Republicans. Instead of tackling the socialist takeover of their own party, host Antonia Hylton accused Trump of socialist policy this Monday in a bizarre and incoherent attack on his new “Trump Accounts”: A program using public funds and taking money from private billionaires to transfer wealth to children. The kind of setup conservatives have sometimes described as socialist. All the while, the president and his allies are hammering Democratic candidates with that very label.   On MS NOW Reports this morning, trying to defend the Dem's radical leftist shift, the cast took the bizarre route of claiming that the "Trump Accounts" program is actually kind of socialist itself. It seems they can't tell the difference between donations and confiscation. pic.twitter.com/zFfk87yQME — James Waterman (@jwatermaniv) July 6, 2026   Hylton avoided the obvious fact that the billionaire’s funds are voluntary contributions to the program, and not the seizure of their wealth like the radical Democrats endorse. She glossed over all the good this program will do in order to unsuccessfully try and make Trump look like a hypocrite. Later, political analyst Molly Jong-Fast would even try to compare the program to Zohran Mamdani’s socialist policies in New York City: Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's a little on the nose, right? And again, this is the thing. So many of these programs and- and you hear this, Zohran talks about this. They're free buses. They're what New York just enacted, universal Pre-K and childcare. MS NOW didn’t stop with frivolous accusations of hypocrisy, however. They had hypocrisy of their own to broadcast. Jong-Fast would try and pretend that the Democrats were in need of defense against these Republican attacks: JONG-FAST: Part of the problem with Democrats has been this taking the high road. And when you're in a world where the mainstream media is so small, it it falls to Democrats to narrate what's happening, to narrate the corruption, to narrate how Trump is comparing himself to autocrats, and then to give advice, you know, to sort of explain what they want to do. The poor tiny mainstream media, so weak and frail that they can’t even defend the Democrats! Unbelievably ironic that the massive media network actively defending the Democrats would try and claim themselves to be tiny and struggling. Then on top of that to claim someone needs to call out Trump, as if their network doesn’t slander Trump constantly. They even asserted there were no communists among the Democrats. Hylton claimed: “To be clear, though, not a single democratic primary candidate who’s won this cycle is a communist. Joe Walsh echoed: “There are no communists running for office right now. I mean, take that lie head on and punch back.” They ignored the fact that Graham Platner proclaimed he was a communist on Reddit a few years back, and Darializa Avila Chevalier was exposed covering up a ton of communist tweets. Speaking of slandering Trump, the hypocrisy continues when Joe Walsh steps up to the plate. While being up in arms about the Republicans’ accusations of communism against the Democratic party, he repeatedly accuses President Trump of being a fascist: Trump is literally a fascist. Point to one thing: ICE. Masked federal thugs on our streets lawlessly abusing the constitutional rights of immigrants and citizens. My god, talk about that. Talk about everything Trump's doing that is fascist.   While complaining about the Republicans calling Democrats communists, and how Americans don't know what "fascist" means, Joe Walsh hypocritically accuses Trump of fascism, continuing to devalue the word in the process. You're literally the cause of the problem, Joe! pic.twitter.com/9Rgz1vxVdx — James Waterman (@jwatermaniv) July 6, 2026   It’s obviously hypocritical to be mad about your opponent’s political accusations only to accuse him immediately after, but Walsh doesn’t stop there. He goes on to claim, “most Americans don't know what communism or fascism is.” If this is true, it’s the fault of people like Joe Walsh, people who accuse anything they don’t like of being fascist. Like the boy who cried wolf, the left have drained all meaning from the word fascist with its rampant overuse. The transcript is below. Click "expand" to read. MS NOW Reports July 6, 2026 11:00:26 AM Eastern (...) ANTONIA HYLTON: Trump accounts are like a college or retirement fund. But for most babies born this year through December 2028, there is an initial $1,000 deposit funded in part by private donors like the founder of Dell and distributed by the federal government. So, a program using public funds and taking money from private billionaires to transfer wealth to children. The kind of setup conservatives have sometimes described as socialist. All the while, the president and his allies are hammering Democratic candidates with that very label. Actually going even further this Independence Day weekend by inaccurately equating the progressive movement to communism. [Cuts to video] DONALD TRUMP: There is now a resurgence of the communist menace in our land, including from newcomers to our country who embrace ideas totally opposed to our way of life and our great success. Communism is a mortal threat to American liberty. It's the enemy of the constitution. You can be loyal to Karl Marx, or you can be loyal to America. You can be a communist, or you can be a patriot. You cannot be both. America will never be a communist country. Won't happen. Our warriors did not fight communism on battlefields across the world, only to have that menace rear its ugly head right back here in America. We're not going to let it happen. It's like a cancer. You got to cut it out. You got to cut it out fast. [Cuts back to live] HYLTON: There are clear echoes here of the red scare rhetoric that followed the first world war and defined the cold war. To be clear, though, not a single democratic primary candidate who’s won this cycle is a communist. But there is a shift going on within the party, with many candidates leaning further left and challenging the establishment, sometimes making it harder for others to find their lane.  Just look at what's happening in the Michigan senate race. State Senator Mallory McMorrow just suspended her bid after failing to successfully define a balance of some sort between the establishment choice and the progressive pick.  Let's get right to our panel with MS NOW political analyst Molly Jong-Fast and former Republican Congressman Joe Walsh, who's since left the GOP and become a Democrat. It's good to see both of you guys this morning.  So, Molly, if it is communism, when Democrats fight for the expansion of public benefits, what do we call it when Trump creates a policy, a program that takes money from billionaires and then redistributes it to families, to children around the country? MOLLY JONG-FAST: Yeah, I don't know. I mean, it's a little on the nose, right? And again, this is the thing. So many of these programs and- and you hear this, Zohran talks about this. They're free buses. They're what New York just enacted, universal Pre-K and childcare. And we see that in New Mexico too. Those are- you know, New Mexico is a great example. They had money from oil and gas, and they used it for free childcare. That's a state that has a high rate of poverty, and the idea here is that mothers and fathers can go to work and have children.  Now you have a country where they want, you know, the birth rate is in decline. And they're, you know, there’s constantly these conversations about how to get people to have more kids. And here is a great option. So that's where we are at this moment. And look, I think it's- you know, remember, Trump runs on fear and he thinks that this is a scary word and that it will get people scared and get them voting for him. But a lot of people feel that capitalism, though it's great and it works, and, and I'm a big fan, that some limits on it, like, you know, higher taxes for people with unspendable wealth, that's really an 80/20 issue. So that's where we are, I think. HYLTON: Joe, I want your take on how successful this kind of message could be outside of Trump's base and, and existing supporters. I ask because there's a new Washington Post analysis of data from the bipartisan National Conference on Citizenship. It shows a +43 percent influx of Republicans and right wing figures invoking communism since last summer, now averaging about 600 times a week. House Speaker Mike Johnson is one of them, and I want you to take a listen to some of his comments. [Cuts to video] MIKE JOHNSON: There are many Mamdanis popping up running for Congress around the country, and you better be very serious about this. This is a serious threat to our whole system of government. These are Marxists. It's communism, socialism. We have to fight this. We're no longer just in an election cycle. We were saying it was common sense versus crazy. Now it's common sense versus communism and everybody needs to wake up. HYLTON: So, Joe, do you think that kind of message resonates, again, with anyone who's outside of the preexisting MAGA base? JOE WALSH: It shouldn't work, but it will if Democrats don't fight back. And that's what Trump and Mike Johnson and all of my former Republican colleagues are counting on, is that, like in the past, Republicans will throw out b.s. like this to - Molly's right - to scare people. And Democrats will just like, act above it all and not fight back. It'll work unless Democrats fight back and punch Trump figuratively in the nose. I mean, he's trying to scare Americans about communists. My god, he's a fascist. Antonia, this is why it works. The Democrats got tagged back in the day with. They all want to defund the police, which was b.s. But the Democrats didn't push back. Trump won to a large degree in 2024 because he threw out all the scare tactics about transgender Americans, and the Harris campaign didn't fight back.  This communism thing will stick with people outside the MAGA base if Democrats think they're better than this and they don't need to get down in the mud and fight back against this, that's what Democrats have to do. HYLTON: Molly, what does fighting back look like? Because there is the reality there are these primaries going on. So there is this intellectual sort of raging debate happening within the Democratic party itself. But then there's also just Trump's own actions on this front. I mean, he has this rhetoric that he's using to attack the left, but he is constantly sort of flirting with, and saying that he likes, for example, XI Jinping. That guy runs a communist country. Then I want you to take a listen to some of his comments in a recent interview with my colleagues at CNBC about the stake the government has taken in Intel. Listen to this: [Cuts to video] TRUMP: Intel came in. They had a problem. I said, I can solve your problem, but I want 10% of the company. They said, what? I said, I want 10% of the company. And he agreed to me. And the stock has gone through. So I think we made $60 or $70 billion in eight months. Do I get credit for that? No. Somebody said, that's not very American. I said, no, I think it is very American, actually. [Cuts back to live] HYLTON: Molly, what would Republicans have done if Barack Obama had done something like that? JONG-FAST: Right. I mean, look, that's what this is about. And I think part of it, I actually totally agree with Joe. Part of the problem with Democrats has been this taking the high road. And when you're in a world where the mainstream media is so small, it it falls to Democrats to narrate what's happening, to narrate the corruption, to narrate how Trump is comparing himself to autocrats, and then to give advice, you know, to sort of explain what they want to do.  I mean, one of the great examples, I think, where Zohran has been really effective is at sort of narrating the things he wants government to do for people in New York City, because it's one thing to say like, you know, they want socialism, they want this, they want that. But then for him to say, you know, “I want you to have fast free buses.” Like that is something that's an 80/20 issue. Who wants a slow bus? You know, who is like, I don't pay enough for public transportation.  And so I think that's a really good example of the way the Democrats have to push back. But I do think Joe is totally right. If you don't meet them on every single, you know, every single one of these fearmongering tactics, everything, every single one of these phrases has to be responded to, either in the negative or in some kind of other pushback, because otherwise you are- If you don't respond, it just sticks. HYLTON: Joe, do you think that there is a Democrat who's doing a good job of this? I ask because I think I have a graphic of all the different kinds of Democrats- actually, it's not even just Democrats who have been called things like communists and marxists by Trump in the past.  Adam Schiff definitely would not qualify as a communist. Kamala Harris: not a communist. Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Barack Obama, Liz Cheney, General Mark Milley. I mean, you get the point here, Joe, but is there someone who you think is pushing back on this kind of framing and doing a good job of kind of calling out how little teeth it all has? WALSH: I think some of these newer Democratic candidates who are fighting. Democratic voters want fighters. Look Antonia, I come from the right. We always believed on the right that we could scare Americans with these culture war issues, and Democrats would never fight back. And generally, that's always worked. So what I've been pleading with my new party is: fight back. The Democratic party isn't communist. There are no communists running for office right now. I mean, take that lie head on and punch back.  Trump is literally a fascist. Point to one thing: ICE. Masked federal thugs on our streets lawlessly abusing the constitutional rights of immigrants and citizens. My god, talk about that. Talk about everything Trump's doing that is fascist. Knowing most Americans don't know what communism or fascism is, but you've got to get in the ring and fight, throw off your coat.  And again, don't think like- don't think like you're speaking to people who listen to MS NOW. Speak like you're- you're talking to regular Americans out there and get in Trump's face and punch him back on this stuff.
