Democrat Files Paperwork To Potentially Replace Graham Platner As Party’s Senate Nominee

Former Maine Senate President Troy Jackson has filed the necessary paperwork to replace Graham Platner as the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate. Prominent Democrats, both nationally and within the state, have called for Platner to withdraw from the Senate race following a POLITICO report of sexual assault allegations against him. Graham Platner Loses Multiple Endorsements Following Sexual Assault Allegations "There is no place in our politics for sexual violence. Not in our party, not in any party. Graham Platner must withdraw from this race today," Jackson wrote on Facebook. "This is not what we stand for. Not as Democrats, not as Mainers, not as human beings. For too long, women who survive sexual violence have been told to stay quiet, to protect the men who hurt them, to think about the campaign, the party, the cause. We cannot ask women to trust us with their futures while looking the other way when one of our own hurts them. That ends here. I believe Jenny Racicot," he continued. Racicot alleged that Platner forced her to have sex with him while he was intoxicated in 2021. Platner, who has faced a string of scandals during the course of his Senate campaign, denied this new accusation in a Monday video posted shortly after the article was published. The Democrat said his campaign is “taking the time to reflect on the best path forward.” "Together, we can bring our shared progressive vision to life. We can pass Medicare For All. We can take on corporate power. We can create the future Mainers and Americans deserve. And we can unseat Susan Collins once and for all," Jackson said. pic.twitter.com/R2DtZZFa8f — Troy Jackson (@TroyJackson207) July 7, 2026 Our Revolution, a political organization founded by Sen. Former Senate President Troy Jackson, who campaigned alongside Platner last year and also earned U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ endorsement, has filed paperwork to form an exploratory committee, making him the first potential replacement to take a concrete step toward entering the race. Although Platner has not formally announced he’s dropping out, he said Monday he’s weighing the best path forward for his campaign. Meanwhile, dozens of prominent party leaders — including his strongest advocate, Sanders — have urged him to end his candidacy. He has also lost the trust of many voters who had stood by him, albeit cautiously, through his previous scandals. Jackson and former Maine Democratic gubernatorial candidate Nirav Shah, who is also being weighed as the oysterman’s replacement, both told Maine Morning Star they would not vote for him if he stayed in the race. Brewer said Jackson is the best candidate to step in to maintain the grassroots support Platner built. But the “it factor” that Platner had that made him into a nationally relevant political figure can’t be replaced, and how much sway that will hold is also unclear. On Tuesday, he filed with the Federal Election Commission to form a U.S. Senate exploratory committee, a step no other potential replacement has taken.
