The Heartbreaking Story Behind Victor French’s Too-Short Life
With Netflix introducing a new generation to the world of Little House on the Prairie, many longtime fans are finding themselves revisiting the actors who helped make the original series such a beloved television classic. Among the most cherished was the actor behind the gruff but lovable Isaiah Edwards.
According to Yahoo Entertainment, while Michael Landon and Melissa Gilbert often stood at the center of the story, Mr. Edwards became one of the show’s most memorable supporting characters thanks to his humor, kindness, and unforgettable friendship with the Ingalls family.

Before joining Little House on the Prairie in 1974, Victor French had already built an impressive career through appearances in Westerns and classic television series, including Gunsmoke, Daniel Boone, Lassie, and The Donna Reed Show. He also worked extensively as a stuntman during his early years in Hollywood.

His portrayal of Isaiah Edwards quickly turned him into a fan favorite. The actor appeared throughout much of the series’ run and even stepped behind the camera to direct several episodes. Although he briefly left the show to star in another television project, he eventually returned and remained closely connected to the world of Walnut Grove.

Sadly, French died in 1989 at the age of 54 after being diagnosed with lung cancer only months earlier. His connection to Little House continued through his son, Victor French Jr., who regularly attended fan conventions and honored his father by performing the beloved song “Old Dan Tucker” for audiences. Even as new adaptations arrive for modern viewers, Victor French remains an important part of the series’ enduring legacy and one of the faces many fans still associate with the heart of Walnut Grove.
