Lindsey Graham's sister Darline Graham Nordone to finish his Senate term. https://t.co/UolQXn1FPA — CBS News (@CBSNews) July 13, 2026 CBS News shared further: The replacement will be able to serve until at least Jan. 3, when a new Congress convenes. President Trump, Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina and others have voiced their support for Nordone. Senate Majority Leader John Thune told CNN that selecting Graham’s sister “makes a lot of sense.” Graham took legal guardianship of his sister when he was 22 and she was 13, after both of their parents died within 15 months of each other. Graham was also running for reelection this fall, and a special Republican primary election will be held on Aug. 11 to determine who will replace him on the ballot. The candidate who wins in November will secure a full six-year term. Graham died Saturday at the age of 71, and a medical examiner’s preliminary findings suggested the cause was aortic dissection, which involves a tear in the main artery from the heart. “I recommended, to Governor Henry McMaster, Lindsey Graham’s wonderful sister, Darline, to serve as interim Senator from the Great State of South Carolina. This would be a fabulous tribute to Lindsey, who loved her dearly!” President Trump said on Monday. President Trump Announces His Recommendation For Who Should Serve The Remainder Of Lindsey Graham’s Term “Lindsey Graham’s sister, Darline Graham Nordone, would be a fantastic pick to serve out the remainder of the senate term. After speaking with Darline, there is no one better who understands Lindsey’s love for family, our state, and our country,” Scott commented. Lindsay wrapped his arms around me and promised me that he would always be there for me and always take care of me. And I can assure you he’s done that. He has never let me down.” She said in a joint interview with her brother on Fox News that year, “I don’t know what I would have done without him.” It’s unclear if Graham Nordone would want to run for her brother’s seat. Graham had been seeking a fifth term in the Senate in this year’s midterm elections after defeating a wealthy GOP challenger in his state’s Republican primary last month. Under South Carolina law, candidates who want to run for Graham’s seat have one week starting July 21 to file for a special primary election that would be held on Aug. 11.
