Straight up mountain music. Today, Old Crow Medicine Show released a live performance video of “My Side Of The Mountain,” which features bluegrass legend Del McCoury and Molly Tuttle. Interestingly, bandleader Ketch Secor wrote the song with Tuttle as well as country superstar Luke Combs, and the studio version of the song appears on the band album Union Made, which was released in June. It’s really cool to see Combs working with Old Crow Medicine Show in particular, as Combs is a longtime fan of theirs and was inspired by them very early on in his career. Bandleader Ketch Secor says it was “a joy” to write with Luke and Molly, and the addition of Dell and his son Ronnie on the song was the cherry on top of it all, so to speak: “Writing ‘My Side of the Mountain’ with Molly and Luke Combs was a joy from the start. What I never saw coming was getting to sing it with Del and Ronnie McCoury. Del has been one of Old Crow’s musical North Stars since the very beginning, and sharing that stage with him at the American Legion is something I’ll never forget.” He previously shared that they were inspired by their love of Watauga county, which is where OCMS famously got discovered in 2000 while the band was living in a cabin near Boone and busking on King Street, as legendary flatpicker Doc Watson found them and helped launch their career. Of course, Watauga county is home to Boone, where Luke Combs attended Appalachian State University and also got his start as a country artist. View this post on Instagram The lyrics describe an old school way of life with a fresh and modern take, as they relish in the mountain life and the simple pleasures that come along with living the simple life in the hollers and hills of a magical place like Watauga county: “It’s a way of life, it’s a way of thinking It’s running around these hills and hollers drinking It’s a patch of land, to make my stand That’s the way of life on my side of the mountain It’s a crooked old pine, it’s a red sun sinking It’s a kudzu vine on a gravestone slowly creeping It’s the family name, the blood in my veins That’s the way of life on my side of the mountain There’s a buckshot sign at the county line Out past Watauga road Where we’re way too proud we don’t back down ‘Cause we’re better off alone All we got is all we need and we sure can survive Well if that kind of living’s wrong Then just read me my rights That’s the way of life on my side of the mountain” As someone who also lived there, I can vouch for the song and tell you they simply spoke the truth. I’m surprised this is the first time Old Crow Medicine Show and Combs have written a song together (they shared the stage once back in 2019), because they have such a shared love for this kind of music and got started in the same place… I would absolutely LOVE to hear Luke on this one eventually. You can hear his influence, and I think that his voice would just take it over the top. Union Made as a whole was intended as a “love letter to the America that was, the America that is, and the America that could be,” reflecting on the “people, places, and stories of a country on its 250th birthday.” The album was recorded in the band’s own East Nashville studio, and the tracklist features nearly a dozen guests including Maggie Rose, Molly Tuttle, Evan Felker, Ronnie McCoury, Jesse Welles, Lee Oskar, John Carter Cash and Ana Cristina Cash.
