It’s a classic. Shania Twain released her new album Little Miss Twain today, and of course, she’s been doing tons of press in the lead-up to the big drop. And during a sit down with Allure, she revealed some really interesting new details about the filming process of her hit video “Any Man of Mine” and everything behind the scenes. Shania wrote the song with her now ex-husband Robert John “Mutt” Lange, who also produced it, and it was included as the second single from 1995 second studio album, The Woman in Me. It became her first number one hit at country radio, and also a minor crossover hit, peaking within the top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart. And a song like that needed a music video to match, and she delivered. The filmed it in Santa Ynez, California, and it was directed by John Derek and Charley Randazzo. Of course, the looks from the video are iconic, as she shows off her famed midriff in a denim look, at some points chaps too (which were leant to her by model Bo Derek), and there’s also a cute brown dress that makes an appearance too. Shania revealed that she bought the dress at a department store, and she was “braless” in it because she was going through a phase after being “strapped in and strapped down” for so many years: “The brown spaghetti strap dress was bought a department store, and I went braless in that. I was just going through this whole braless stage, because I was so tired of being strapped in and strapped down. I was very sporty as a kid, and I was always one of these double bra girls so that I wouldn’t bounce around.” Bet you didn’t know that… She went on to say that it was really the horses that made the video so special for her, like living out a “fairytale,” and they even trained the horse the actually pass her a towel in the bathtub, which was completely real. In addition, Shania revealed that she had cut her own hair for the video, which she was doing herself at the time, and I have to say, that might be the most impressive thing about the whole video because her hair is legendary in and of itself: “‘Any Man of Mine,’ 1995, directed by John Derek and Charley Randazzo. This video really makes me chuckle. I love to ride horses, and I was in heaven just being around horses that whole day, riding out, playing cowgirl. This video is all my own wardrobe, the T-shirt I snipped it up the front and tied it again, to just a little looser, fun look with the belly button. And Bo Derek lent me her chops, that added a nice touch. My haircut at all times is always something that I need to have fun with and be playful with, I like it to move. at this time in my career, I was still my own hair cutter. I cut my own hair. Fun thing about this video that I indulged in was the horses, and given a towel in the bathtub by a horse through the window was so magical. His name was Slick, and she was a gelding paint, and the trainer did this horse to hand you items. And this horse genuinely did hand me the towel. He completely understood the cue, and on cue. I would say very fairytale experience for me. I was living a liberation that I’d never lived before, and coming into my own. This was a good video that was a turning point for me in that sense of really coming into my own.” Shania has always been a horse lover, and she now takes them on tour with her, and it’s hard to overstate just how big this song and video were for her career.
