A long time coming. For all intents and purposes, Appalachia has become one of the epicenters for today’s biggest and brightest stars in the flourishing independent/alternative scene. Of course, you have the staples of the genre such as Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Chris Stapleton hailing from Kentucky. With that being said, however, once you expand out and include the likes of both Kentucky, West Virginia and Virginia, it truly shows just how talented the region is, with other stellar acts such as Charles Wesley Godwin, Sierra Ferrell, 49 Winchester, Brit Taylor, Cole Chaney, Ole 60, John R. Miller, Low Gap, Nolan Taylor and many more hailing from the region. One artist who has continually flown under the radar is none other than Ian Noe. In case you’re unfamiliar with the Kentucky native, there was a time when it felt like he was going to be the next big thing flying out of the alternative country scene. This was thanks to his phenomenal debut album, Between the Country, back in 2019, which contains phenomenal tracks such as “Letter to Madeline,” “Meth Head,” “Dead on the River (Rolling Down)” and more. Since then, however, he’s only released one album, River Fools & Mountain Saints, in 2022. After a long wait, Noe is FINALLY returning with a brand new record. Announced this morning, the 36-year-old singer/songwriter is releasing his third studio album, Canyon Falls Trailer Band, on Friday, September 25th. View this post on Instagram If you’re a fan of Noe, the prospect of a new album after four years is exciting enough. However, it becomes even more interesting when you dive into the details. Canyon Falls Trailer Band is a 16-track concept album which follows the titular, fictional band who will “perform for one night only as a showcase seeking industry approval.” Additionally, he promises to explore a plethora of different styles throughout the project, ranging from folk rock to country. Given how inherent the frustration with the music industry is with many artists such as Noe and his Appalachian counterparts, it’s an album that’s ripe with potential, commentary and stellar storytelling – especially from a writer like Noe. Discussing the album, the “Junk Town” singer would call it a parent of the first two records, noting that it brings together just about everything he’s been writing over the past seven or eight years. “It feels like the parent or maybe the grandparent of the first two records. Once it was finished, I realized it brought together everything I’d been writing about over the last seven or eight years.” To kick things off today, Noe dropped the album’s first single, “The Heidelberg Fisherman’s Ball,” a fiddle and steel-fueled romp that he describes as a simple story of fishermen gathering down by the riverside to find themselves a wife. “This is simply the story of a fisherman’s gathering down by the riverside where the various women of Heidelberg present themselves like a date auction and try to find a mate. That is the Heidelberg Fisherman’s Ball.” If you’re a fan of the independent/alternative scene lately, Canyon Falls Trailer Band is nothing short of a must-listen when it drops on September 25th.
