The story of Shania Twain life is coming to the big screen. Deadline revealed back in June that a biopic of the country superstar is in the works and is being produced by Sony Pictures, with Leah McKendrick set to direct based on her own original script. The title has been revealed as “Shania,” though more details in terms of plot, release date, cast and things of that nature are being kept under wraps for now. Shania grew up in Timmins, Ontario, a city in northern Canada, and she has been open about the financial hardship her family went through when she was very young. She started singing in local bars at the age of eight to help her family make ends meet, and she also experienced multiple types of abuse which she’s been open about in more recent years. Of course, she went on to become one of the biggest country stars of a generation and a 90s icon, and she has certainly had a fascinating life that really does make for a great movie. Shania has sold more than 100 million albums worldwide, and she remains the top-selling female country-pop artist of all time. She also made history as the first artist ever to release three consecutive Diamond-certified albums. She will produce the film alongside Amie Karp. Director Leah McKendrick is a filmmaker who had her first big breakout moment with the movie Scrambled, and more recently, she wrote and directed the Netflix rom-com movie of Voicemails for Isabelle, which starred Zoey Deutch and Nick Robinson. And during a recent interview with People in support of her recent album Little Miss Twain, Shania revealed that she does have two specific actresses in mind to play her. I imagine it would be an honor for any actress to be chosen by the person they’re playing to take on such a big role, but for now, Shania kept her picks private because she’s afraid there’s a chance they might not work out: “So I will say that I do have two actresses in mind, but I don’t wanna say because I don’t wanna jinx it. Like, what if they don’t wanna do it? I’m gonna have to be able to take that on the chin, right? Or they’re not available, or I don’t know, so I don’t want to jink it and then put it out there and it doesn’t happen.
