Something Stinks About Weight-Loss Drugs
Another day, another study about the dangers of GLP-1 weight loss drugs.
A new study shows that people who use these injectable weight loss drugs are more likely to lose their sense of taste and smell.
Over 800,000 patients were studied for up to two years after they started taking the drugs and researchers found that they had “a higher risk of new smell and taste disturbances.” Which may mean that it doesn’t come back.
Why does this matter?
Because taste and smell aren’t frivolous extras. They influence nutrition, memory and quality of life. They also warn us about smoke, gas leaks and spoiled food. Changes in how food tastes may also be part of how these drugs suppress appetite, which raises an uncomfortable question: Where does the therapeutic effect end and the side effect begin?
