Who is in the right? Who is in the wrong? That’s what everyone is trying to figure out after this video of an incident at a Halifax, Nova Scotia, Shaboozey concert went viral. This TikTok video – which has whopping 15 MILLION views and over 300,000 likes (and thousands of comments) – is really an exercise in concert etiquette. Music fans know that the behavior of concert attendees has worsened over the past few years, with people going as far as throwing phones at performers on stage and stopping concerts dead in their tracks. That I’ll never really understand. In this footage, a woman at a Shaboozey concert was in the pit with her 10-year-old daughter and asked someone standing in the very front row if they could let her little one in front of her to see the “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” better. The Shaboozey fan stood her ground and refused to move, dropping an f-bomb in the process. I thought Canadians were supposed to be super polite, eh? The mother took a video of her and posted it to TikTok, saying: “We only asked if our 10-year-old could stand in front for one Shaboozey song… not the whole concert. Though her aggressive tone leads me to believe we might be missing some context to this story (I reached out to Ashleigh for comment and have yet to hear back), that didn’t stop thousands of TikTokers from jumping into the replies and siding with… the front-row concertgoer. That’s right. Almost everyone in the comments said that the Shaboozey fan standing on the railing did nothing wrong. There were some replies that somewhat sympathized with the mother: “I get your daughter wanted to see, but you can’t expect someone to move out of their spot because you have a 10 year old.” “You can ask. They can and should say no.” “I mean could she have let the kid? Yes. Should you have expected her to? No. Maybe get a seat next time and don’t bring your kid in the pit so they can see?” But the overwhelming response was social media users telling the mom that the other concertgoer didn’t owe her or her kids anything, and that by videoing the woman standing front row and posting it online, she was actually the one in the wrong: “PEOPLE DON’T OWE YOUR KIDS ANYTHING.” “Get there earlier next time, hope this helps.” “Kids are not VIP passes.” “She probably had been standing there for hours. You don’t get to roll up and ask that. She can say no. Get out of her face.” “Why are you filming strangers and putting it online? Based on the people around here, she seems like a very tall woman, I’d venture to guess she could’ve easily seen over the the 10 year old girl. Was she right to tell the mom to kick rocks? I mean, she got there first, right? But it certainly would be very kind to let the little kid have a better view for one song. Is there a middle ground here? Why was she so annoyed? There’s probably more questions than answers here, but at the same time, the viral exchange as well as the comment section, does seem to indicate this seemingly growing public sentiment that you should absolutely prioritize yourself and your own happiness in all situations.
