Pictures; Columbia Pictures; Plus M Entertainment There is a lot of entertainment out there these days, and a lot of fantasy, sci-fi, and horror titles to parse through. So we’re rounding up the genre movies coming out each month.  The long-awaited Practical Magic sequel hits theaters this month—just in time to kick off spooky season. In addition to some more traditional horror movies, like the newest Resident Evil reboot, there is also a Shaun the Sheep monster flick for those out there who love Halloween but don’t really want to be scared. Also DreamWorks’ latest movie—a fantasy-adventure set on an island full of mythical Filipino creatures—premieres at the end of September.  Tom and Jerry: Forbidden Compass — in theaters September 4 A Tom and Jerry movie? In the year 2026? Exploring a fantastical world inspired by Chinese mythology? Let’s go! The cat and mouse duo find themselves transported to another realm via magical compass. They have to put aside their differences and work together in order to return home. Parasomnia — on Shudder September 4 This Shudder original follows a woman with a tragic past who is constantly tormented by night terrors. After her best friend goes missing, she realizes that the demonic figure lurking in her dreams might’ve slipped into the real world…  Onslaught — in theaters September 4 Adria Ajorna stars as an army sniper who must protect her daughter after a group of soldiers goes rogue in the desert. But they’re not just regular military personnel: this battalion is full of genetically engineered super soldiers who broke out of a secret experimental military facility. Director Adam Wingard says that the movie is a “spiritual sequel” to his 2014 horror movie The Guest. Dark Hollow — available on VOD September 4 If claustrophobic coal mines weren’t already terrifying enough, this one’s got a terrifying monster that’s recently broken free from the depths. After her husband goes missing during a partial collapse, one young mother must venture down into the mines and face off against a nightmarish creature in order to save her family.  Hope — in limited theaters September 9 A mysterious creature has been destroying portions of a remote mountain village in Korea. Authorities begin to investigate, but then realize that the threat isn’t just rogue wildlife… but some sort of strange, otherworldly monsters.  Practical Magic 2 — in theaters September 11  The witchy Owens family returns—and this time, they’ll finally rid themselves of the curse that kills their love interests! Well, they can hope. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return as Sally and Gillian Owens. After Sally’s oldest daughter begins digging into the family’s past, the Owens women travel to England to find the source of the family magic and finally break the curse. If that wasn’t intriguing enough, Lee Pace stars as Sally’s potential new love interest. Resident Evil — in theaters September 18 Zach Cregger, the director behind Barbarian and Weapons, takes on the hit horror franchise Resident Evil. After the first six films (helmed by Paul W.S. Anderson and starring Milla Jovovich), the series was already rebooted once with Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City in 2021—so let’s see if this reboot sticks. Cregger’s film parallels the events of the 1998 video game Resident Evil 2, but set in the modern era. It stars Austin Abrams as Bryan, a medical courier caught in the middle of a zombie outbreak. Shaun the Sheep: The Beast of Mossy Bottom — in theaters September 18 In the third Shaun the Sheep feature film, the Farmer goes missing… so the lovable flock of sheep must search for him in the nearby woods! But what’s that? A mysterious beast roaming the forest! Shaun and the rest of the flock need to band together and be brave in order to save the farm and the day. April X — in select theaters September 18 Heated Rivalry’s Connor Storrie stars as Bax, a young man in a futuristic cityscape. After his twin sister goes missing, he searches every corner of the neon-lit metropolis’ criminal underworld to find her. But as he spirals, he might lose more than just his twin. Forgotten Island — in theaters September 25 The directors of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish return with an original animated fantasy adventure. Set in the Philippines in the 1990s, two best friends party one last time before one of them moves to the United States for college. But when they wake up the next day, they find themselves on a strange, magical island full of creatures from Filipino mythology.
