O’Donnell Celebrates ‘Bad Guys’ Losing, Hails El-Sayed After Midterms

MS NOW via SnapStream During Wednesday’s The Last Word, host Lawrence O’Donnell took a victory lap following the Democrats’ win in the midterm elections, and repeatedly declared that “the bad guys lost” some 12 times while celebrating what he portrayed as a long awaited Hollywood-style ending to American politics.O’Donnell began the segment by praising Michigan Senator-elect Abdul El-Sayed, and claimed that no candidate in American history had been “more viciously and falsely attacked.” O’Donnell then introduced a clip of El-Sayed addressing his supporters before leading into his rant:EL-SAYED: And so to all the kids who watched this last month, to all the parents who struggled to explain why the president openly mocked someone for their name or how they pray, let them know tomorrow that the bad guys lost.Echoing El-Sayed’s message “The bad guys lost. So important. That was the movie ending we all grew up with, that bad guys lost. That was the way it always was supposed to end. The bad guys lost in the end.” O’Donnell then took viewers through his own version of American political history, suggesting that the country had experienced several different endings before finally arriving at the one he wanted.  “Sometimes you might not know how long the movie turned out to be,” said O’Donnell before referencing Richard Nixon’s resignation following the Watergate scandal. O’Donnell continued by describing how viewers may have thought that “the bad guys won, twice” in reference to Nixon’s reelection. He then concluded that Americans “didn't know how long that movie was” until many in Nixon’s administration who went to prison, in which Democrats “knew once again that the bad guys lost in the end.”But, according to O’Donnell, the story took another unfortunate turn with Trump:That wasn't supposed to just be in the movies. That was supposed to be the American way. The bad guys lost. Then came Donald Trump, and he won the Electoral College after coming in second in the vote in 2016. But then he lost to Joe Biden in 2020. And we got to think once again that the bad guys lose in the end. But it wasn't the end for Donald Trump.O’Donnell then went on to make up a scenario of a 15-year-old boy whose community Trump “viciously attacks on a daily basis.” Though O’Donnell failed to specify what form these attacks take, it can be assumed that he’s referring to ICE. If this is the case, then yes, Trump was in fact getting the bad guys out that are making communities worse. This dramatic framing that O’Donnell frequently takes should be noted, given his history of covering the Trump administration's election-monitoring efforts, in which Democrats pushed speculation on DOJ election monitors. O’Donnell was even sure to note this monitoring could be connected to the GOP's apparent effort to interfere with the election. For O’Donnell, the midterms were a perfect ending to a political movie, complete with heroes, villains, and an amazing cliffhanger. The transcript is below. So important. That was the movie ending we all grew up with, that bad guys lost. That was the way it always was supposed to end. The bad guys lost in the end. Sometimes you might not know how long the movie turned out to be. Like when Richard Nixon won the presidency in 1968 and then got reelected with an even bigger vote in 1972. You might have thought then that the bad guys won, twice, but that's just because you didn't know how long that movie was. And the Nixon movie ended in 1974, with Richard Nixon resigning the presidency halfway through his second term, accepting a pardon for his crimes committed in the White House. While watching 40 of his associates and staff go to prison. And then we knew once again that the bad guys lost in the end. That wasn't supposed to just be in the movies. That was supposed to be the American way. The bad guys lost. Then came Donald Trump, and he won the Electoral College after coming in second in the vote in 2016. But then he lost to Joe Biden in 2020. And we got to think once again that the bad guys lose in the end. But it wasn't the end for Donald Trump. He came back in a version of a movie we'd never seen. And so, for a 15 year old boy in America listening to senator elect El-Sayed's say last night, the idea that the bad guys lost is not not that 15 year old boys lived experience except in the movies, especially if that little boy is in one of the communities in this country that Donald Trump viciously attacks on a daily basis. And so for those of us who became unmoored from that safe American belief that the bad guys lose, in the end, it could be hard to believe that it was really happening last night. That could be part of why people are struggling to, as they say, wrap their heads around it. And then we heard a new senator say it. The bad guys lost, and then we could feel it. The bad guys lost, and then we could know where we really are in this drama.(...)
