Shannen Doherty Is Glad She Didn’t Return For ‘Charmed’ Finale
Premiering in 1998, Charmed ran for eight seasons, with a major cast shakeup occurring at the end of season three. Shannen Doherty did not return for season four after her character Prue was written out of the show, and she did not make a special return in time for the series finale, a choice that Doherty does not regret to this day.
The reason for Doherty’s departure has been the subject of great debate among fans and between the cast members themselves. Actress Alyssa Milano reportedly approached execs and claimed that each day she confronted a hostile work environment and that either she or Doherty would be leaving. Doherty has shared more on making peace with staying at arm’s distance even as the fantasy drama wrapped up.

In any other show, Doherty’s character returning almost half a decade later would have been nearly impossible under the circumstances. But the fantastical nature of Charmed would have made such a reunion easy to manage. Would have, but did not, and Doherty is just fine with that.

Doherty was invited by producers to return to Charmed for the finale, an invitation she ultimately rejected.
On her Let’s Be Clear podcast, Doherty admitted that at that point she still felt “so incredibly wrecked from getting fire that, I think, even years — years — years later, had I walked on that set, it just would’ve stirred everything back up for me. And it would’ve crushed me all over again.”

Doherty did feel remorse in “one sense” that she did not return for the Charmed finale. “I regret it for the fans,” she explained. But, knowing her own situation and limits, feels she made the right call for herself.

“But I don’t regret it for me,” she admitted, citing the emotional turmoil she believed woul come if she walked back on set after such an intense fallout.
53-year-old Doherty is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with back in 2020, after her 2015 cancer went into remission in 2017, only to return three years later.
