Fans of Shelley Duvall were devastated to hear about her passing in July, but a friend of hers has recently shared an uplifting clip from the actress’s final days. While receiving hospice care in her Texas home, the celebrity was visited by a young fan with whom she’d struck up a sweet friendship. This woman, who runs several Shelley Duvall fan pages online, was there on the 75-year-old’s last birthday. Their video together is absolutely heartwarming! In the clip, Shelley Duvall’s friend made sure the actress knew how much her fans still loved her. She wished the elderly celebrity a happy birthday with an arm wrapped around her. And while it was extremely difficult to see her health declining, I took it upon myself to offer her the gift of companionship and dignity. Upon every recent visit I had the sinking feeling that it would be the last and made myself cherish every moment. But something about visiting her on July 7, her 75th birthday, did feel different. The conversations we had felt more “final” and all encompassing but it never once was solemn. She was extremely lucid and her authentic self as I read fan letters, showed her fan-made birthday videos, brushed and braided her hair, and even lit her cigarettes. She generously let me sit next to her in bed for hours that evening and even while she was in pain she was still so selfless and accommodating, making sure I was also comfortable. Her kind and selfless spirit is something I’ll emulate in my own life. She was always that same pure-hearted Shelley. At one point, she laid her head in my lap as I read her the fan letters and I made sure to commit her glowing eyes and warm smile to my memory. Shelley always hated goodbyes but after I tucked her into bed and turned to leave she affectionately thanked me for “heightening her spirits” and expressed that she had a “fantastic” birthday. I truly think some greater force was at play and all the birthday wishes, as well as my in-person visit, helped to give her the strength, comfort, and peace to pass over. I wish I could give her one last hug or phone call. I am so thankful that Shelley and Dan welcomed me into their life. I feel blessed to have had a genuine friendship like that. She was loved. Remember that. I will continue to preserve her magical life and legacy and I hope my page will offer solitude.
