Josh Abbott Says He’d Have “Two Albums Worth Of Great Song Titles” If He Hung Out With Legendary Bull Rider JB Mauney More Often
This is a duo that I can get behind.
The National Finals Rodeo might be over, but the content is still flowing. Social media content creators are still sharing their looks; the rodeo athletes are still reveling in their accomplishments over the ten rounds, and interview clips are still being shared from the week.
We've said it before and will say it again, but the NFR is more than just a rodeo. It's a Western sport and country music lovers' dream, as the event also features some of the best talents in country music. Given that rodeoing and country music have a hefty crossover to begin with, some of the content featuring rodeo stars and country music names makes for some of the best.
After one of the rounds at the Thomas & Mack Center, JB Mauney, legendary bull rider, and Josh Abbott sat down to chat, and it sounds like a collaboration is in the pipeline between these two. The Teton Ridge interviewer asked Abbott if a rumor she heard was true that Mauney helped him name a song that would be coming out in the future.
"Yeah, we can't use the full title on here just yet. We don't want to give away our creativity, alright?"
Abbott replies. After confirming the rumor is true, Abbott makes it sound like hanging out with Mauney is giving him a lot of creative ideas for his music.
"I actually think if I hung out with him for a week, I'd have two albums worth of just great song titles."
Mauney shares a witty thought about how his cowboy phrases could inspire some catchy song titles, even if they might not be the kindest words for family listening.
"You couldn't play it anywhere but the late-night shows. REAL late-night shows. But yes, they're there."
Now, that's a collaboration I'd want to hear.
JB Mauney is not a face that has crossed over into country music, but now that he's retired from being a professional bull rider, the world is his oyster. Mauney is no stranger to good country music as he's been involved in the Western industry for many year,s so maybe this is a perfect career move for him.
I can't wait to hear some of these song titles that Mauney and Abbott have been cooking up.

Josh and the boys kicked off 2024 with a stellar album, Somewhere Down The Road, the 7th studio album of their decorated career. The band got started out in Lubbock in the mid-2000s, and quickly became a cornerstone of the Texas country music scene.
Featuring 11 diverse tracks and an instrumental intro, Somewhere Down the Road is an eclectic album that offers several sonic styles and song subjects including everything from thoughtful and introspective ballads, to honky tonk heaters... and everything in between.
Joining Abbott on this record is a fresh band lineup featuring new members Cale Richardson and Kris Farrow slinging guitar and Adam Hill on fiddle, as well as familiar faces and longtime band members David Fralin on keys, drummer Eddie Villanueva, Austin Davis on banjo, and bassist Jimmy Hartman.
