Incredible Bird Sculptures Completely Transform When Viewed From The Side
In some circles, people might call Thomas Deininger a junk man. He indeed collects a lot of junk. What happens to it in Thomas’ hands is a transformation. This incredible artist takes a pile of literal trash and turns it into detailed and beautiful bird sculptures. The trash doesn’t disappear into his sculptures. It is visible when you change the angle you view the sculptures from.

Did you see Sully? Did you see some old Barbie dolls? One poor Barbie has blue hair and resembles a Troll doll. Was that Donald Duck? Yes, it was. After viewing Thomas’ sculptures from the side, you had to rewatch the video to make sure you saw what you thought you saw. I’ve lost count and see something new each time I watch it.
Based in Rhode Island, Thomas uses a love of the environment to create each of his stunning bird sculptures. He is working on clearing our landfills one sculpture at a time using only non-biodegradable materials that are not recyclable.

Thomas’ bird sculptures are known as “detritus mosaics.” He developed the innovative style after traveling and seeing how other cultures handled waste. His sculptures have appeared in galleries around the world. You can see more of his work on Instagram or his website. You can learn more about Thomas from an interview with JeJune Magazine. He discusses the motivation behind his artwork with Gnarly Bay below.
The difference in each sculpture is amazing when viewed from the side. You see a beautiful bird, bee, or other animal from the front and a literal mash-up of junk from the side. Each sculpture is like a 3-dimensional jigsaw puzzle that creates a forward-facing image of beauty.
