“POV: You Stumbled Upon A Shark Cuddle Puddle”
The Urban Dictionary defines a cuddle puddle as “A group of people cuddling en masse, usually to comfort each other or express mutual friendship.” We see signs of cuddle puddles in the animal kingdom, too. Kittens and puppies often pile on one another to nap and seek comfort. Undersea animals don’t want to be left out of the pile. Diver Kayleigh Nicole Grant discovered a shark cuddle puddle that is entirely adorable.

“Mermaid” Kayleigh stumbled upon the whitetip reef sharks while on a live-aboard diving vacation with Nautilus Adventures. The company operates several luxury yachts that specialize in offering unique diving experiences.
Whitetip reef sharks are medium-sized sharks with a distinctive white tip on their dorsal fin. They have slim bodies and reside within the coral reefs of the Pacific and Indian Oceans. Being nocturnal, they spend their days resting in caves along the reefs. They are a communal fish, which explains the shark cuddle puddle Kayleigh found.

Unlike many shark species, whitetip reef sharks do not need to move to breathe. This allows them to pile atop one another like a stack of logs. They may stay in the shark cuddle puddle for hours during rest periods.
The largest whitetip reef shark recorded weighed 40.3 pounds, and the longest was seven feet. The average length is around 5.3 feet. They reach sexual maturity when they are around eight years old. Females may give birth to litters of one to five pups per season. Their life expectancy is approximately 25 years.
