Throwback To Sturgill Simpson, Tyler Childers & Wheeler Walker Jr.’s Legendary Performance Of “Sit On My Face”
The trio of country music stars you didn't know you needed.
Tyler Childers, Sturgill Simpson and Wheeler Walker Jr. are all remarkable, influential country music artists in their own right. All three can easily stand alone as their own thing and roar with success... but what happens when you put the three of them together? Specifically to sing one of Wheeler Walker Jr's delightfully dirty hits?
Gold. That's what happens. Solid, musical gold.
What do all three of these artist have in common? Other than being first class country singers? Simpson, Childers and Walker Jr. are all from my home state, the Bluegrass State of Kentucky. Simpson hails from Jackson, Kentucky, Childers is from Lawrence County, and the man behind Wheeler Walker Jr. (also known as comedian Ben Hoffman) is from Lexington, Kentucky.
It would have been fitting for this raucous performance of "Sit On My Face" to take place in their Old Kentucky Home, but the trio instead came together in 2018 at the Hinterland Music Festival in St. Charles, Iowa. The festival has been known to boast some impressive lineups, but its safe to say that the event peaked when these three shared the stage.
At first, it was just Wheeler Walker Jr. that walked out to share the stage with Childers and his band the Food Stamps. Tyler and the boys were set to play the 1:30pm time slot at the festival... one of the earliest of the day. Of course, these days, he's heading massive venues as one of the highest grossing touring musicians in country music. God bless it.
Anyways, as Tyler toweled off and prepared for the next duet, the profane lyricist introduced himself - and fired up the crowd as he welcomed another Kentucky born artist to the stage to play guitar:
"What's up? I'm Wheeler Walker Jr., I'm from Kentucky. This is my buddy Tyler from Kentucky. Tyler wanted me to play one of my songs, so kids put your f***ing ear muffs on.
We've got another guy from Kentucky playing guitar with us. His name is Sturgill Simpson."
The crowd went nuts when Sturgill walked out, and then the band got right into Walker Jr's 2016 vulgar hit "Sit On My Face." Wheeler takes the first verse (I won't be typing out any of the lyrics, you'll hear them soon enough), and then gets a little help from Childers in the hilariously raunchy chorus.
Then surprisingly, Tyler Childers does the honor of singing the second verse, and to be honest, it's a little wild hearing the crudest country songwriting you could ever imagine coming out of Childers' mouth. That being said, it actually helps make the song that much more funny.
I only wish Sturgill would have come in for the third verse:

That right there is how you rock the stage.
After Walker Jr. gave some knucks to Tyler and walked off stage, Childers said this as he tuned up his guitar for the next song up (that I'm assuming was not another Wheeler Walker Jr. staple):
""Look that one up on iTunes and Amazon. Make sure to call into your local radio station and request that one. It's called 'Sit On My Face.'"
A local radio station would have a heart attack if they got that one spinning out on the air for all to hear.
Unfortunately, it seems that's one of the only times the three Kentuckians have ever shared the stage. Which is a shame, to be frank. That trio could sell out stadiums, let alone arenas, if they went on tour together. If they looked in the comment section of this video and saw how many people were psyched to see them all team up, they'd have to at least consider it:
"The three of them on the same damn stage (finally!) and they play THIS song? F**king epic."
"The security guard was trying so damn hard not to laugh."
"One of the best moments in country music history right here."
"I’d lose my mind seeing all three on stage like that."
"I am dying laughing listening to Tyler sing this. I can't imagine the man who wrote the beautiful lyrics of 'Lady May' singing these words."
