Coming Soon: New Ronnie Milsap Biopic Starring Spencer Boldman

The man who deserves a heck of a lot more credit is finally about to get some. Just today Variety announced that a new a new biopic about Ronnie Milsap, the extremely underrated country music Hall of Famer with 35 number one's, 8 CMAs (including 1977 Entertainer of the Year), and 35 million records sold, was in the works. It will be based on "Almost Like a Song", Ronnie's autobiography that was released in 1990. https://twitter.com/andrew_mies/status/1873830249840226618 Spencer Boldman, known for his performances in Welcome To Chippendales, Cruise, Zapped, Lab Rats, and 21 Jump Street, will take the lead. He spent time with Ronnie at his home in Nashville so both men were comfortable with the role. Ronnie gave Boldman his blessing and will serve as a producer. In a statement, Boldman said: "It is an honor for me to help execute Ronnie’s incredible story as well as portray him in the film. Having personally spent time with this living legend and get his blessing, is a gift. I can’t wait to make him and his fans proud." Gary Negherbon of Negherbon Media Group and Antonia DeNardo, Boldman's manger, will also serve as Executive Producers. Negherbon had the following to say about Boldman taking the role: "We are so excited that Spencer embraced our project, with the passion and enthusiasm that he has, and I know audiences will be stunned and moved by his portrayal of Ronnie. Hearing Ronnie’s amazing story of survival, determination and ultimate achievement, I knew that this was a story that had to be shared with the world and I can’t wait for audiences to see Spencer in this role." Ronnie Milsap was born almost completely blind in 1942 in Robbinsville, North Carolina. He was abandoned by his mother as an infant and raised by his grandparents. He grew up listening to gospel and country, but began his own musical career as an RnB artist, until Charlie Pride happened to attend a performance of his at the iconic Whisky-A-Go-Go club in Los Angeles. You can read that entire story here but long story short, Pride pulled him aside and told him to stop with the RnB and to go back to his Smoky Mountain roots. Obviously, that worked out pretty well and the rest, as they say, is history. It seems like the tide may be turning on modern country music acknowledging the greatness of Ronnie Milsap, who has been overlooked by nearly all when discussing the genre's greats. Ella Langley said she's been listening to a lot of Ronnie when asked about the inspirations for her next album, Zach Top and Craig Campbell posted an impromptu cover of "Stranger Things Have Happened", and Kelly Clarkson covered "It Was Almost Like A Song" during the "Kellyoke" segment of her talk show, all of which are little tea leaves that begin to show the country music world starting to publicly give Ronnie his props. I've been a huge Ronnie Milsap fan since the days of my dad driving me around in his little blue Saturn. We'd sing "Stranger In My House", "Smoky Mountain Range", and "Any Day Now" until we were blue in the face, me none the wiser that these songs came out well over a decade before I was born. From the silky vocals to the anthemic piano licks, Ronnie Milsap was truly a one of one artist and I am beyond excited that he finally gets his moment on the silver screen (or whatever streaming service picks this one up). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oXe5ETmifkM
