Thanks to a G3 geomagnetic storm on December 29th, which sent three strong solar flares into Earth’s atmosphere, some may have already spotted the lights over the past two days. The storm has since downgraded to a G1, so the resulting auroras will be dimmer tonight. They are expected to reach a maximum of 2 on the Kp scale, which ranges from 0-9. The New Year Northern Lights Will Reach A Maximum of Kp 2 Because this round will be less vibrant, it’s important to drive away from cities to get the best views.
