“Favorite Song I’ve Ever Recorded” – George Strait’s “Amarillo By Morning” Performance At Gruene Hall Is Country Music Perfection
It simply doesn't get better.
Back in 2016, The King himself, George Strait, returned to Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, Texas, to perform a nearly two-hour set in celebration of his then-new album, Strait Out of the Box: Part II.
Gruene Hall is a historic country venue, somewhere Strait himself got his start way back in the day, so it was a special return for many reasons... but seeing someone of his caliber, a legend who can still sell out stadiums, play a small honky tonk like this is just beyond cool.
During the show, he of course ran through hits like “Troubadour,” “Wrapped” and more, but his performance of "Amarillo by Morning," is something special. Strait introduced it by called the song his "most favorite song," and while he has 60 #1 hits to his name, but shockingly, this wasn't one of them... which is a cryin' shame, but I digress:
"My most favorite song I've ever recorded, and it was big in the dance halls, people always requested it. This one's called 'Amarillo By Morning.' I love singing it."
"Amarillo by Morning" was released in 1982, becoming a hit from his Strait from the Heart record after it peaked at #4 on the Billboard U.S. Hot Country Songs, and has obviously remained a timeless country standard ever since. Perhaps his most popular song of all time.
And this performance... it's just perfect. Somehow this legend continually gets better with age and I can't get enough:

Fans in the comments section seemed to agree, and many commented about how incredible his voice still is... and this video is almost nine years old now, though they're still completely right and after seeing him in concert over the summer, I'd argue that's still true today:
"'I ain't got a dime but what I got is mine, I ain't rich but Lord I'm free.' One of the best lyrics ever written."
"His voice ages like wine."
"Sounds even better than 30 years ago. I'm a life long fan but for a 67 year old man to sing like that..... just amazing."
"Undoubtedly the King. None of this pop country. This is where it's at."
"His beautiful voice hasn’t changed at all."
"That's why this man is the king of country music...this was recorded live, in an old wood frame honky tonk, and still sounds every bit as good as an edited studio version. He's the last of a dying breed.
"This generation will never know what it's like to watch a concert without cell phone being held up in the air in front of them. Put it down and just enjoy the moment...and get off my grass."
"I swear George Strait's voice has gotten better with age.
"I don't know why, but every time I hear this song, my eyes well up in tears. I'm not a rodeo cowboy or clown, I never was one nor do I have any connection with the rodeo business. Like I said, I don't know why but maybe it's because the song and lyrics are pure and simple."
"This is country music at its finest. Not a big arena or stadium show. Just a legendary artist performing at a legendary bar. Man I wish I could have seen this show in person.
"Man his voice is impeccable, no one compares."
"That voice is insane."
"George sounds exactly as he did decades back. That is real talent!"
"His voice is even richer as he ages!"
What else more can you say about it?
He's the King for a reason...
