Cody Johnson On “Flipping The Switch” From Country Star To Father, Husband & Rancher When He Gets Home
Cody Johnson likes to compartmentalize things in his life.
The country music star had one hell of a 2024, and he's looking to build on that - and his career in general - as he enters into 2025. And for CoJo, focusing in on his music isn't hard at all. In fact, it's become second nature to him, as he explained in a quote from ABC's Country Top 40:
"Country songs are what I live for. Besides (my wife) Brandi, besides our two beautiful daughters, it’s the only thing in life for me that’s a constant. It’s in my blood. It’s in my DNA. I wake up with it every day in the forefront of my mind, trying to make country music that means something."
Good save there by Cody to include his wife and kids after initially saying country music is what he lives for. He would have undoubtedly been in the dog house if that statement got out there without the family portion.
I'm sure that his family would have understood though. After all, the Texas native has quickly become a household name in the country music industry, and much of that is thanks to the continuous hard work and dedication to his craft. In Johnson's mind, he wants to go down as one of the all-time greats:
"(I wanted) to be a guy that comes along and says, ‘I want to change country music for the better.' I want 35 years from now to be that guy that’s sitting up on stage like George Strait, where they say, ‘He did something.’ And that’s it for me."
Clearly Cody Johnson's career is incredibly important to him.
That being said, the "Dirt Cheap" singer also knows when to turn off the country music star side of things and flip on the father, husband, and rancher switch. When Johnson is back at home at his ranch near Huntsville, Texas, he tries to drop his duties as a country singer and songwriter and focuses on the more simple things in life - like taking care of his cattle and spending quality time with his family.
Back in November, shortly after winning CMA Album of the Year for Leather, the country star was ready to return to Texas and resume his rancher and father/husband duties:
"We just shipped out a bunch of calves last week, and (we’re) getting some new cows pulled in: a couple of new bulls and we’re going with some different breeds. Like, I breed Braford cows, which (you get from) a Hereford bull and Brahman cows. And I think we’re fixing to get into the black Angus business a little bit for some more beef-type cattle.
And that’s when I go home and flip the switch off. I mean, I’m not Cody Johnson the singer. I’m the rancher, the husband, the dad and, you know, I take my kids hunting and fishing and all that. And then whenever I get to come out here (to Nashville), I flip the switch and turn into this guy.”
That's gotta be a valuable and well-utilized "switch" for CoJo. And hey, whatever he has to do in order to keep pumping out high-quality country music...
