Campaign To Recall Gavin Newsom Launches

A campaign to recall California Gov. Gavin Newsom has launched. “Saving California, a newly formed non-partisan coalition of working families, professionals, and community advocates, announced today the launch of a recall campaign targeting Governor Gavin Newsom,” a statement shared by Randy Economy read. “Under the reign of Governor Newsom, living in California has become impossible for average people through years of poor policies which have increased the costs of living, increased crime, increased drug use and homelessness, increased the cost of burden on small businesses and communities, while decreasing our professional standards, education standards, the disappearance of billions of taxpayers’ dollars to failed pet programs, and our public services,” Economy said. “This was most recently demonstrated by the woefully unprepared and incompetent response to the fires currently ravaging the Los Angeles area. Just today, Governor Newsom was asked ‘What is your plan to deal with the lack of water to deal with the fires?’ and he responded by saying ‘local folks are gonna figure it out.’ That’s not leadership! Leadership is solving problems, not passing the buck and the blame, and Californians can no longer afford to have an empty suit occupying the governorship. It’s time for Californians to take back control of our mismanaged government, and using the recall tool is our last hope,” Economy added. “The coalition plans to serve recall papers to Governor Newsom within two weeks, citing growing concerns over California’s rising taxes, cost of living, and ineffective emergency responses – issues that have contributed to the state’s first population decline in history,” the statement read. #ALERT Jan 10, 2025, 08:54 ET Governor Gavin Newsom to Be Formally Served Recall Papers in Next Two Weeks Following Los Angeles Wildfire Catastrophe LOS ANGELES, Jan. 10, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Saving California, a newly formed non-partisan coalition of working families,… — RANDY ECONOMY (@EconomyRadio) January 12, 2025 From the New York Post: Economy, who led a recall against Newsom in 2021, started the organization “Saving California” in late 2024 which boasts of a mix of professionals, working families and community advocates. “Governor Gavin Newsom’s governance has been marked by a series of catastrophic failures, particularly his mismanagement of the recent wildfires, which have led to unprecedented displacement and destruction,” Dr. Houman David Hemmati, another organizer, also argued. “Wildfires are a common and well-known issue in California. The fact that Governor Newsom has not been able to come up with any plan or prep after six years as governor and eight years as lieutenant governor shows that he is completely unprepared and lacks the compassion and will to lead California any longer,” Hemmati added. Newsom, 57, easily survived the 2021 recall vote in a state where Democrats hold a clear advantage in voter registration over Republicans. A petition calling for the “immediate recall” of Bass has surpassed 130,000 signatures. Petition For “Immediate Recall” Of Los Angeles Mayor Gains Massive Support “We, the undersigned residents of Los Angeles and concerned citizens, urgently call for the immediate recall of Mayor Karen Bass due to her gross mismanagement and failure to effectively respond to the devastating 2025 fires in and around the city of Los Angeles,” the petition reads. “In the wake of these catastrophic fires, our city has been left in crisis. Water supplies have been severely strained, billions of taxpayer dollars have been misallocated or left unaccounted for, and countless lives have been lost. Families have been displaced, homes destroyed, and livelihoods shattered—yet Mayor Bass has been absent from the frontlines, choosing to travel abroad while her constituents suffer,” it adds. She has announced her intention to seek reelection in 2026. But in California, any elected public officer can be recalled by voters before their time in office expires. This includes state officials like the governor and local officials like the mayor. One formal recall effort has already been launched against Newsom, while more than 100,000 signatures have been attached to an online petition demanding Bass' resignation. Citing Newsom's comments about rebuilding the Pacific Palisades, Randy Economy, who is leading the recall effort against Newsom, told Newsweek it's not the governor's to rebuild. "How dare he? It's up to the 10,000, 15,000 homes that have been destroyed," he said. "It's up to the people." "This is emblematic of who he is as a leader, and I think this is emblematic of who he is as a politician, and he has no depth," Economy said in an interview Monday. "So therefore we are taking the extraordinary steps to officially recall him."
