Democrats recently elected the individuals who will lead the Democratic National Committee during the early days of President Donald Trump’s second term. While party leaders tried to put on a positive display in front of the crowd, there was a much less optimistic tone behind the scenes. The New York Times conducted more than 50 interviews and came to one conclusion, as Brietbart reported: Although many Democrats agree they need to tackle issues that propelled Trump into office, they cannot figure out how to do that: Democrats broadly agree that they need to do more to address the issues that powered Mr. Trump’s campaign, like grocery costs, inflation and immigration. But there is little consensus on how — or even whether — to prioritize the party’s traditional concerns like abortion rights, L.G.B.T.Q. equality and climate change. Some Democrats fear that even as those issues continued to animate the party’s base, they failed to resonate among a broader swath of voters in the last presidential election. “We have no coherent message,” Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-TX) said. “This guy is psychotic, and there’s so much, but everything that underlines it is white supremacy and hate. How many of you believe that racism and misogyny played a role in Vice President Harris’ defeat?” MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart asked the eight candidates. “That’s good. You all passed,” Capehart said after all candidates raised their hands in agreement. Republican lawmakers and pundits pounced on clips of the exchange, including Sen. Tommy Tubervile, R-Ala., who quipped that the GOP will expand its majority in the midterms. Singing also broke out both during the forum and the vote. Dr. Quintessa Hathaway was in the running for chair and belted out a song with the lyrics, “You fight on, when the government is doing you wrong, you fight on” during the Thursday forum.
