Sabrina Carpenter Fans Slam Dolly Parton Duet, Think It Sounds Like Bad AI: “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Is Gonna Love This”

DISCLAIMER: This article does not discredit Dolly Parton, the Queen of Country Music. We love Dolly and her work; this piece adds commentary to a discussion that already exists in the digital space. Sorry folks, I can’t have our readers thinking I’m hating on Dolly Parton… Today, Dolly Parton teamed up with Sabrina Carpenter to put a country twist on her mega-hit song “Please Please Please.” The collaboration is featured on the deluxe edition of Sabrina’s Short n’ Sweet album, also released today. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sabrina Carpenter (@sabrinacarpenter) If you have not heard “Please Please Please,” I hate to be that person, but you must be living under a rock. Sabrina dominated the charts with the song. “Please Please Please,” combined with her other hit song, “Espresso,” made for a cultural phenomenon, winning her Best Pop Solo Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album at the Grammy Awards. The reimagination of the hit song got the complete music video treatment as the two channeled “Goodbye Earl” in the video. As a fan of Sabrina Carpenter and Dolly Parton, I loved seeing the announcement of the song. It’s really neat seeing someone like Parton working with a wide variety of artists from many different genres. However, I must admit this single didn’t do it for me the way I thought. It’s not that I don’t like it. I would describe it as the following… Am I going to skip this song if it plays on my Spotify? No. Am I going to reach for this version over the original take of “Please Please Please?” No. Honestly, I think this song feels a little too Gen Z for Parton… While I sat on my initial feelings, keeping my thoughts to myself as I would never slander Parton, I was stunned when I opened social media to see that some other creators had similar feelings. While I was feeling “meh” on the song, one TikTok user brought up a very compelling argument that Dolly Parton should have been featured on Sabrina’s track “Slim Pickins.” “Slim Pickins” already features a country-inspired melody, and unlike the threatening lyrics of “Please Please Please,” “Slim Pickins” highlights lyrics of wanting a great love but feeling like there are no honest and good men left on the earth- which feels like something Parton would sing about in her everyday studio sessions. The creator who posted this take noted in her caption that she felt Dolly’s vocals on “Please, Please, Please” sounded like AI, and a ton of comments (probably from Gen Z kids who don’t know anything about Dolly Parton) seemed to agree that sentiment. While I don’t necessarily agree with that, I just think their vocal range is vastly different. I do like this take, and I also believe that Parton would’ve been better suited on “Slim Pickins.” It just feels like a more natural fit. @thoseconcertgirls i feel badddd it’s giving ai #sabrinacarpenter #shortnsweetdeluxe #shortnsweet #dollyparton #pleasepleaseplease #fangirl ♬ please please please featuring dolly parton – ⋆࿔ unreleased hub ☽⌕ This take sparked a heated debate in the video’s comments, and now, the viral take has thousands of comments arguing whether they agree or disagree. Some fans are taking it a little too far, noting that Dolly sounds “creepy” in her verse. Of course, plenty took to the comments to defend Dolly from this insane slander. Like I said, I think it just comes down to the song not being a great fit for Dolly, and a lot of kids not really knowing who she is. Check out what folks are saying: “Dolly sounds like she’s creeping up on me.” “Why does only dolly sound like she recorded it in 1950.” “You can’t convince me this isn’t AI” “Bad AI is the best description I’ve heard” “Okay I’m glad I’m not the only one. I felt bad.” “Do NOT disrespect Dolly like that.” “It sounds like …. she’s right behind me isn’t she.” “First time I heard ‘Slim Pickins’ I thought it was SO Dolly!.” “I would’ve figured they’d do ‘Slim Pickins’… but what do I know.” “‘Grandma Got Runover By A Reindeer’ sounds different here.” “Not tolerating Dolly disrespect–like it sounds cute.” “It’s giving ‘Karma’ ft Ice Spice.” “It sounds like Daisy Duck” “No literally it genuinely sounds like AI” “Someone said she sounds like a lil ghost in the background.” “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is gonna love this.” “This sounds like AI lmao.” “Not too much on my girl Dolly she is an OG.” “I don’t mind the remix, but I would have liked Dolly on ‘Slim Pickins’ cuz that song is just fit for Dolly on its own w/out any changing of anything.” “It sounds like a song that would be playing during a Disney ride. Almost old splash mountain vibes.” “I actually think Dolly would have been good on this song if they reconstructed the whole thing to better accommodate their voices together.” That last song truly sums up my thoughts about the duet. Fire up the two tracks while you’re here and come to your conclusions. “Please Please Please” “Slim Pickins” The post Sabrina Carpenter Fans Slam Dolly Parton Duet, Think It Sounds Like Bad AI: “Mickey Mouse Clubhouse Is Gonna Love This” first appeared on Whiskey Riff.
