If you forgot about the live-action Gundam movie we were promised just shy of four years ago, it’s okay. It’s been a time. And much has changed! When Legendary announced the film, Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts was at the helm, and the movie was headed to Netflix.
There’s no mention of Netflix in the latest Gundam news, which comes courtesy of Variety: Euphoria and Immaculate (pictured above) star Sydney Sweeney is “in final talks” to join the project, which is now in the hands of Sweet Tooth showrunner Jim Mickle, who will write and direct. The film is being developed by Legendary and Bandai Namco Filmworks.
Gundam is the latest take on the Japanese mecha franchise, which was created by Yoshiyuki Tomino and began in 1979 with Mobile Suit Gundam, an animated series. The Gundam universe now includes series, Char freaking Aznable, comics, manga, an Andrew W.K. album, figurines, video games, novels, and just about anything else you can think of. But there’s never been a live-action film.
In short, some people will get in big mecha suits and fight, probably in space, and probably in the future. But no plot details on this specific Gundam have been revealed—nor has a production timeline or release date.[end-mark]
