Warning: This article contains spoilers for The Wheel of Time’s season three episode, “Goldeneyes.”
This week’s The Wheel of Time episode is a memorable one. Yes, it includes that epic battle at the Two Rivers where Perrin gains the name Goldeneyes from his people. And yes, it also includes a heart-wrenching moment when someone goes through the waygate and tries to stop the Trollocs.
And it includes what I call the Fig Scene, an intimate moment between Alanna Mosvani and Maksim, played respectively by Priyanka Bose and Taylor Napier, that involves Maksim munching on gigantic figs before the two reconnect.
“Feeding Taylor a lot of figs should be in every script,” Bose joked when I interviewed her about this episode. “He’s not pleasant to watch while eating a lot of figs.”
How many figs did Napier eat? “I lost count at fig 32.” he told me. “There was just a giant bucket of figs. And the way the scene was written is that they were supposed to be small enough that I could just pop it into my mouth, but the ones available in the Czech Republic were quite hefty, so it wasn’t going to be a quick pop… I had to take a bite to swallow, take another bite to and swallow, and I wasn’t able to get it all down.”

Napier needed to get that fig down because the scene ends with Maksim and Alanna kissing. Doing so was a challenge. “I’m sitting there trying to swallow the fig and make out with her at the same time, because I know I have a line coming up,” he said. “I think part of the reason we wound up taking off my shirt was just to give me a second to swallow the rest of the fig so it wouldn’t be on camera.”
Figs aside, Napier and Bose also saw intense action during the battle at Two Rivers. This isn’t the first time we’ve seen them fight this season, of course: Ciaran Donnelly directed “Goldeneyes” as well as the first episode of the season, which has the jaw-dropping cold open with the battle at Tar Valon.
“In terms of just the sheer scope of it, for me the battle in the Two Rivers felt so much bigger,” Napier said. “We rehearsed my part of the battle in Tar Valon quite extensively, but we rehearsed that stuff in the Two Rivers for probably four or five weeks… it was so cool to get to have that much time to really do something and really invest in this massive sequence that is so iconic in the books, and hopefully will be iconic on the show as well.”

Alanna gets maimed during this latest battle, something that Bose was already familiar with. “Having seven arrows sticking from you is not pleasant,” Bose said, referencing her character’s wounds from a previous episode. “And then that blood is so goopy and sticky… so it’s a lot. But when the people around you are supporting you with the best attitude, then the least you can do is show up with your best attitude.”
Maksim also has a moment of leadership during the battle when he rallies the people of the Two Rivers to keep fighting. “It was a dream come true for me as an actor to be able to do that, because I’ve done a lot of theater, and it just felt like it was doing theater again,” Napier said. “Alanna has just been hurt quite dramatically, and he’s feeling that pain. And I think before this scene, Maksim has been someone who maybe can’t control his emotions in the most productive way. He wallows in them, and he can’t use them for good. And through giving this speech, he’s able to find within himself the power to turn this pain into anger, and to use that anger to motivate, to push the people of the Two Rivers forward, and to do some good with the emotion that he’s feeling. So he’s kind of making lemonade out of lemons.”
Figs! Lemons! What kind of fruits will the season three finale of The Wheel of Time entail? We’ll find out when it premieres on Prime Video on April 17, 2025. [end-mark]
