‘Melrose Place’ Star Amy Locane Reveals Why She Disappeared From The Show After 13 Episodes
Most people remember Amy Locane for the wrong reasons. To many, she’s the actress who served time for a drunk driving crash that killed a 60-year-old woman, a tragedy that greatly affected her promising Hollywood career. But long before prison and headlines, Locane was Sandy Harling on Melrose Place, the southern belle who added charm to the show’s earliest days.
Many don’t know why her character suddenly disappeared after just 13 episodes. Even fewer realize that Locane has just completed another prison sentence, walking free again as of December 2024.
Why did Amy Locane leave ‘Melrose Place’? She didn’t fit into what the show wanted

In 1992, Melrose Place launched with Locane as one of its original cast members. Her character, Sandy, is a flirty, fast-talking aspiring actress from the South who shares an apartment with Rhonda (Vanessa Williams) and has a complicated relationship with Jake (Grant Show). She had storylines involving a stalker, a rescue, and a departure, all within the first season.
After just 13 episodes, Sandy was gone. Locane revealed that her exit wasn’t a simple creative decision. She shared that the show was an automatic season, and they made the decision that she didn’t fit what they were going for after the 12 episodes had already aired. She also added that her southern accent was weird for some people. A lot of people liked Sandy, but maybe she was a little too campy. Still, she holds no bitterness; she’s open and excited about the reboot. Heather Locklear, Laura Leighton, and Daphne Zuniga are already on board, and Locane says she’d join in “in a heartbeat.”

Amy Locane was convicted of second-degree vehicular homicide
After stepping away from acting in 2006, Locane says the silence left a void she didn’t know how to fill. That emptiness spiraled into a period of personal instability that eventually led to the 2010 DUI crash. She was convicted of second-degree vehicular homicide and assault and served prison time from 2013 to 2015. But that wasn’t the end of it. In 2020, she was sent back to prison after the original sentence was deemed too lenient.

Now 53, Locane is sober, grounded, and carries the weight of what happened every single day. While returning to acting is on the table, Locane isn’t chasing the spotlight. Her daughters, Paige and Avery, are her world now. She lives just outside Princeton, New Jersey, and says her biggest dream these days is a quiet future with her family and maybe, just maybe, love again.
