China Accuses U.S. Agency Of Launching Cyberattack
China has accused the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) of conducting “advanced” cyberattacks during the Asian Winter Games in February.
The Chinese government named three alleged hackers and “offered an award for information leading to their arrest,” NBC News stated.
“The Chinese Communist Party needs to stop with these fabrications. If they want to engage in useful conversations they can pick up the phone and call. Instead of engaging productively, China continues unfair trade practices and retaliation to hurt the United States and our workers. The CCP also continues to claim false equivalence to excuse its own bad acts in cyberspace,” White House National Security Council spokesperson Kylie Newbold said in a statement, according to the outlet.

NBC News reports:
The NSA did not respond to requests for comment, and NBC News was unable to immediately determine if the NSA currently employs people with the names China made public.
The claims were published Tuesday in a report by China’s National Computer Virus Emergency Response Center (CVERC), a Chinese organization that tracks cyber threats to the country; echoed by the country’s primary law enforcement agency, the Ministry of Public Security; and amplified by state media organizations.
The CVERC report largely focuses on claims that the NSA hacked digital infrastructure to spy on the Asian Winter Games, held in February in the Chinese city of Harbin, but include few technical details.
Lin Jian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said in a news conference Tuesday: “The nature of these actions is extremely malicious, and China condemns the U.S. government’s malicious cyber activities.”
“Police in the northeastern city of Harbin said three alleged NSA agents to a wanted list and also accused the University of California and Virginia Tech of being involved in the attacks after carrying out investigations, according to a report by state news agency Xinhua,” Reuters noted.

Per Reuters:
It did not specify how the two American universities were involved.
The U.S. Embassy in China did not respond to an emailed request for comment.
China’s foreign ministry later confirmed the attacks and said Beijing had raised its concerns with the United States.
“We urge the U.S. to take a responsible attitude on the issue of cyber security and … stop unprovoked smears and attacks on China,” ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a regular news briefing.
The detailed allegations come as the world’s two largest economies spiral deeper into a trade war that has already spurred travel warnings for Chinese tourists going to the U.S. and halted imports of U.S. films into China.
