Luke Bryan Watched The Full Blue Origin Broadcast To Make Sure Katy Perry Came Back Safely: “Let’s Face It… It Could Blow Up”
I mean, that’s always a possibility…
On Monday, six women took a Blue Origin rocket into outer space for an 11-minute flight, which included Gayle King, Katy Perry, Amanda Nguyen, Aisha Bowe, Lauren Sánchez and Kerianne Flynn. Katy Perry has been making a lot of headlines leading up to the trip, and all of them seemed excited about this wild adventure… well, everyone except for CBS News co-host, the aforementioned Gayle King.
Blue Origin takes passengers to the Kármán line, approximately 62-mile (100 km) above the surface of the Earth, which is a relatively arbitrary line that is regarded as the “boundary of space.” However, Blue Origin’s New Shepard are not ships that orbit Earth like the traditional NASA rocket launches we see. And just for reference, the international Space Station orbits at around 250 miles from the Earth’s surface.

At 9:30 am, the rocket took off and the flight was a complete success, but as someone who also hates (probably not even a strong enough word) to fly, I sympathize with Gayle King and how nervous she was to go through with the trip… the woman did not look well beforehand and she became a viral meme:

But Perry has taken the brunt of a lot of the criticism, and her post-flight interview was really something… we’ll get to that in a minute, but her former American Idol co-host and country star Luke Bryan stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night and was of course asked what he thought about his friend’s trip into the cosmos.
He said he started following it and watched the full one-hour telecast, and admitted he was mostly watching to make sure his friend made it back to earth safely and it didn’t “blow up”:
“I accidentally started following it. I was doing my morning walk around the farm, which turns into checking Instagram and stuff, and I saw where she was like posting on her Instagram that it was happening at 8:30 central, and totally got roped into the moment. Went and clicked on the links, and back when she announced that she was gonna do that, I’d send her a text going, ‘Good luck, wow, that’s crazy you’re getting to do that.’
And like I said, a couple couple months later, there I am walking around my farm watching the one hour telecast of it… and I’m sitting there walking, and it roped me in. Because when you have a friend, I mean, let’s face it, it could blow up. So I wanted it to not do that.”
Well, that’s kind of what everyone else was thinking, too… he’s just saying the quiet part out loud, because I don’t think you can watch a rocket launch of any kind and not have those thoughts come to mind, especially if you know someone on it.
Kimmel also asked Bryan if he saw Perry’s strange post-flight interview, where she looked like she had definitely taken some sort of drug, legal or otherwise, and Luke joked that he wondered if Bezos had given the ladies a meal beforehand that included mushrooms:
“I saw her kiss the ground, which that would be my reaction too… was there a pre-flight meal? Did Bezos serve mushrooms on it? Like, I really wanna go to space now. It must’ve been quite the euphoric ride through the cosmos, Katy. Maybe she’ll debrief me on those emotions.”
They also joked about Bryan going and being the “space cowboy,” and talked about whether or not he’d actually go, but Bryan thinks his family would say no and it would never happen. He thinks he would do it if the opportunity ever came up, but honestly based on the negative reaction they’ve all received from this little adventure, I’m not so sure that would be the best idea…
