Allergen Detection Dog Shows Off Her Lifesaving Skill In Impressive Video
Food allergies tend to have a far greater effect on someone’s life than people realize. Natalie Rice would know — her own daughter has a very dangerous peanut allergy. Ensuring that her daughter is safe can be anxiety inducing. One incident in particular pushed the family to combat her allergen in a new, improved way. And so Harley the allergy dog entered their lives, forever changing them for the better.
Yes, every single dog is a good boy. That said, Charlie the golden retriever embodies the personality of a “good boy” in a way that deserves extra special recognition. Thanks to the training he has gone through, he is able to detect even the smallest traces of peanuts in food. See him in action in the video below!
@detectiveharleyfadd We figured out it was the fries in the container because two people ordered the same dish: my daughter ordered a sandwich with a side of fries and my brother ordered the same sandwich with a side salad. Harley cleared my brother’s container and alerted to my daughter’s container for traces of peanuts. So my daughter ended up with the sandwich with the side salad, and my brother ended up with the other sandwich with the side of fries. None of these items should have had any peanuts or traces of peanuts (and we alerted the restaurant to the peanut allergy when we ordered), but cross-contact happens. It was likely from the fryer or, if not made in-house at the restaurant, the manufacturing process involved with the sweet potato fries. It was a huge save. Thank you, Harley! In this video, we see Harley sniff two different meals — and it’s a good thing he did. When he inspected the one meant for Natalie’s daughter, he indicated that peanuts are present. Luckily, the only thing different about these meals is that one had fries (the peanut one) and the other had a salad. So, Natalie’s daughter simply ate the other meal.
Meet Harley, the Sweet Allergy Dog Who Has the Power to Save Lives
In this case, it seems that the fries may have been fried in peanut oil. Alternatively, cross-contact could have happened (basically, that’s when traces of an allergen are accidentally transferred, something that’s more possible than you’d think). This is impressive, of course, but how can they know Harley can notice even the smallest traces of peanuts? Well…
@detectiveharleyfadd You can never be too careful. Once Harley alerted to the bread in the plastic bag (and yes, she can smell through that plastic), I knew something was up, so I was very careful about how I removed the bread and we were able to figure out what was going on. Had I not been careful in removing the bread and touched the plastic, getting peanut residue on my hands, and then touched the bread, she would have alerted to the bread as well. We know many bakeries either bake some of their own items with peanuts or have items that contain peanuts. So even if she passes something once, we still check every time because mistakes can happen…even with something as simple as handling an item. In this case, it wasn’t the food that was the problem. It was the plastic container itself! Since most bakeries are likely to have peanut products in them, it would make sense that the chance of cross-contact is high. Still, the fact that Harley was able to pick up on it is incredibly impressive!
Having a life-threatening allergen is oh-so-challenging. But it’s clear that allergen dogs like Harley not only help but bring extra joy into life!
